Hideo Kojima, director of Kojima Productions, says their upcoming horror game, OD, which was first revealed in 2023, is a departure from their previous work. In an interview with ananweb (translated by Automaton Media), Kojima explained that the studio is aiming to completely rethink how the game will be delivered and experienced by players.
The developer has previously created both stealth games, like Metal Gear, and games focused on delivery, such as the two Death Stranding titles. While these games are all unique, they share underlying systems and mechanics from previous projects. He hinted at more details coming soon, but isn’t ready to share them just yet.
Kojima explained that while he’s not ready to reveal details just yet, and success isn’t guaranteed, his team is attempting something truly new. They’ve previously innovated in game genres like stealth and delivery, but the underlying game mechanics remained familiar. This new project, however, aims to completely redefine how the game is delivered and experienced, making it a significant undertaking. Kojima hinted that the recently released trailer contains clues, encouraging fans to analyze it closely for answers.
It’s still unclear what Hideo Kojima is aiming for with his new game, OD. His studio hasn’t shared many details or marketing materials yet. The latest update was the “Knock” trailer released in September, which showed similarities to his earlier project, P.T.. The over three-minute trailer suggests OD will likely be a first-person horror game focused on solving puzzles.
The trailer relied heavily on striking visuals, like melting candle wax turning into blood, and even a candle oozing worms. Throughout the scene, a character attempts to light candles while a constant knocking echoes from behind a door. Eventually, the knocking stops as the door creaks open, causing everything – even inanimate objects like a picture on the window – to react with panic.
Even though work on OD was happening, the SAG-AFTRA strike in late 2024 and early 2025 caused significant delays. Hideo Kojima announced on social media that both OD and another upcoming spy game, Physint, were impacted by the strike. Concerns about whether OD was still being made also arose when Microsoft had large layoffs earlier in the year. Ultimately, Microsoft confirmed that Kojima Productions is still developing the game in partnership with Xbox.
