Warning! Warning! Warning: Massive spoilers for the book ‘Project Hail Mary‘ lie ahead. Proceed with care. It would be best to read the book before the upcoming film, scheduled for release in 2026.
This version maintains the original message but is more concise and easier to read, while still preserving a sense of urgency and importance.
Following my completion of “Project Hail Mary” by Andy Weir, I find myself constantly pondering about its forthcoming film adaptation. Being a fan of the movie “The Martian,” my anticipation for this novel was already high; however, after immersing myself in the book, my excitement has soared to heights that warrant a round of applause – or more humorously, jazz hands! Yet, my enthusiasm is also laced with curiosity, as I struggle to fathom how this intricate space-oriented story will be translated to the silver screen by Ryan Gosling, taking on the role of Ryland, and directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
And those questions are all centered around one very important character: Rocky.
How Will The Way Rocky And Ryland Communicate Be Depicted On Screen?
In simpler terms, the challenge lies in adapting the book’s portrayal of communication between Rocky and Ryland, as Ryland has a device to understand and translate Rocky’s language initially. Later in the story, they learn each other’s languages fluently. In the book, the narrative is from Ryland’s perspective, so we only see his translations of Rocky’s words on the page. Translating this for the movie might require creative solutions to convey their conversation without needing translation devices.
It seems unlikely that the film would delve into Ryland’s thoughts continuously, as it wouldn’t align with reality. Instead, we might need him to articulate his thoughts so we can comprehend them. Also, I doubt they will make the movie a continuous narration of Ryland explaining Rocky to us throughout.

On Amazon, you can purchase the paperback edition of “Project Hail Mary” for just $13.98. By the way, I highly suggest pairing your reading with an audiobook from Audible as well – trust me, it significantly enhances your reading experience. Check out the offer!
That leads me to two theories about how they’ll address the language barrier.
One option is to have subtitles for Rocky’s dialogue in the film, which would allow melodic sounds to represent the Eridians’ native language. These sounds could be used alongside captions, and Ryland could then comprehend the alien speech once he learns their language.
An alternative idea would be to modify the story slightly, such that the computer is consistently serving as a translator for Ryland. Instead of building technology designed specifically for logging and deciphering Rocky’s vocabulary, this could involve creating a program that instantly picks up dialogues, translates them, and vocalizes the translation directly for him.
It seems to me that both options could be suitable, but honestly, I really don’t want them to alter anything because it’s quite impressive how quickly Ryland has picked up the language, showing off his smarts in an amazing way.

What Will Rocky Look Like?
I found the visuals and descriptions of characters in “Project Hail Mary,” particularly about Rocky, incredibly vivid, shaping a clear image in my mind. Consequently, this has piqued my curiosity about what his appearance will be like in the upcoming movie. I speculate that it might mirror Ryland’s initial reaction when he fully saw the alien for the first time, which was: “This is not what I expected at all.
He’s a spider. A big-assed spider.
As a film enthusiast, I must admit that the subsequent plot details left me with a few intriguing queries. The book paints an unusual picture of Rocky, a character with five legs and no eyes, who is also depicted wearing clothes. In the lingo of our hesitant astronaut, this enigmatic entity named Rocky seems more like an anthropomorphic octopus donning attire!
Rocky is considerably smaller than a human, roughly equivalent to the size of a Labrador dog. He sports a central shell-like structure that resembles a pentagon and measures approximately 18 inches across, with a thickness equivalent to half its width. No eyes or facial features are discernible. Each leg, which seems more like an arm due to its joint in the middle (resembling an elbow), concludes with a hand. Thus, he boasts five hands, each adorned with those distinctive triangular fingers I observed closely during our last encounter.
Essentially, I envision a spider with a rock-like appearance similar to The Thing from The Fantastic Four. This brings up some major concerns about how they’ll bring this Eridian character to life on screen. My primary concern revolves around whether he’ll be a physical prop or digital animation.
During the panel discussion for this movie at San Diego Comic-Con (as reported by Deadline), it was revealed that puppeteers were hired to portray Rocky. This means Ryan Gosling had someone real to act with, not just a tennis ball that would be replaced with CGI later. Nevertheless, we’re unsure about the specific blend of practical and visual effects that will be employed in the film.
I think they’re likely to blend elements from both approaches to bring Rocky to life convincingly, and after merely catching a glimpse of his arm in the trailer for Project Hail Mary, I am confident that the rest of his appearance will be nothing short of astonishing and strikingly lifelike.

How Will Rocky’s Tunnels In Ryland’s Ship Look?
From the widely-watched trailer for “Project Hail Mary,” we catch glimpses of Rocky’s spaceship and the tunnel he constructs to connect it with Blip-A, but there are no details about how the alien will occupy Ryland’s spacecraft. In the novel, once Rocky settles in the human ship, he creates his own network of tunnels to facilitate movement and air circulation according to his needs. He also has a compact space vessel for navigating around the ship.
I find it challenging to visualize how the story’s events, particularly Ryland’s ship transformation as depicted in the film, will unfold, given that Rocky enters rather late in the book and significantly alters the ship’s interior.
It’s truly a challenge for me to even imagine what it might become, but I have complete faith in Lord, Miller and their team. I’m certain that whatever they produce will be visually stunning beyond measure.

Will Rocky And Ryland’s End Stay The Same?
Admittedly, I never guessed how Project Hail Mary would conclude. Although I figured Ryland might not make it back to Earth, I didn’t anticipate him living among the Eridians instead. Even though it was a joyful resolution, there were still some unresolved plot points that could be neatly wrapped up in a movie adaptation.
Before delving into it, let me express my appreciation for this conclusion. I understand that under real-life circumstances, Ryland wouldn’t have an undeniable proof he saved Earth. Yet, considering the situation, I anticipate a stronger confirmation of his actions in the movie version.
I find myself curious about whether they might modify the conclusion to provide some additional insights into Earth’s developments following Ryland’s transmission of the solution via the beetle.
In the film adaptation, given that it can’t tell the story in first person as the book does, it presents a chance to delve deeper into Earth’s events. This could potentially involve flashbacks showing reactions to Ryland’s discovery of the beetle, efforts to solve the astrophage problem, or Stratt’s response to Ryland’s findings. The film might offer additional insights not possible in the book, making the most of this opportunity to provide a more comprehensive portrayal of the story. I’m optimistic that they will indeed capitalize on this chance.
Experiencing the book “Project Hail Mary” was truly unique and the story is outstanding, so I’m deeply concerned about how it will be translated onto the big screen. I must admit that I’m puzzled by the visual hurdles they may face. Yet, just like Ryland, I remain optimistic that they’ll find innovative solutions to these challenges in a way that promises an engaging and spectacular sci-fi film.
