Being a superhero isn’t for the weak-hearted; it requires tremendous sacrifices to don a mask and patrol the streets each night, safeguarding innocents. Even shows like the Arrowverse, known for their embrace of the more comedic aspects of the originals, test their heroes relentlessly. The Flash, played by Barry Allen, experiences more hardships than most – he lost his mother at a young age, and after reuniting with his father following years apart, saw him die. To add to his sorrows, as Central City’s protector, he must also witness the disappearance of his future daughter, whom he is unable to save due to the potential disruption she poses to the timeline.
Although Barry encounters numerous difficulties, he’s not alone among Arrowverse heroes who continually lose loved ones. The character who initiated it all, Oliver Queen, experiences nothing but misfortune during his stint on The CW’s Arrow. Eventually, the franchise offers him a reprieve by enabling him to rectify significant errors, yet there’s still one instance he can’t correct, even with limitless power at his disposal.
The Queen Family Never Finds Its Footing in Arrow
In simpler terms, Oliver Queen was a typical privileged youth who preferred partying over pursuing meaningful endeavors. His parents, Moira and Robert, were involved in dubious business deals to maintain their wealth. Money’s origin didn’t bother Oliver, and when his father proposed a boat trip on the family yacht, he accepted. Unfortunately, a tragic accident occurred, sinking the yacht, with Robert sacrificing himself so Oliver could survive. After five years of intense training, Oliver returned to Starling City as a vigilante, but even being a hero didn’t shield him from the shadows that followed him.
After returning home, Oliver unfortunately loses his cherished friend Tommy. Later, Slade Wilson arrives with a grudge against Oliver, causing harm without mercy by murdering Moira in front of her kids. More sorrow follows in later seasons when Laurel Lance is killed by Damien Darhk in Season 4 and Quentin can’t escape an encounter with Ricardo Diaz in Season 6. It seems like Oliver may not endure more pain, but his half-sister Emiko enters the picture to cause trouble for him. Despite her intentions, he comprehends where she is coming from. Regrettably, Emiko also passes away before they can build a relationship. Although he mourns each loss deeply, Oliver tries to give them another chance by… (continuing with the original text’s final sentence).
Oliver Queen Becoming the Spectre Changes the Arrowverse for the Better
In the “Elseworlds” crossover, Oliver Queen strikes a bargain with the Monitor to preserve The Flash and Supergirl’s lives. His death is imminent during the upcoming “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” yet he accepts this fate willingly. As predicted, everyone is taken aback except for Oliver himself, who is prepared to hand over his role. However, the multiverse has different intentions for him, leading Jim Corrigan to extend an opportunity for him to transform into the Spectre, a powerful entity capable of standing up to the Anti-Monitor. By the end of “Crisis,” Oliver takes on the villain and creates a new multiverse to replace the one that was annihilated.
Upon their arrival at Earth Prime, a world now named as such, several aspects have altered, with Supergirl and National City residing on the planet. Oliver takes it upon himself to restore those close to him, reviving Tommy, Quentin, Moira, and Emiko. In a heartrending gathering at his funeral, his friends recall their hero, yet one figure is conspicuously absent: Robert. Heartbreakingly, the death of the Queen family patriarch is an unalterable event that Oliver cannot change, leaving him with a bitter pill to swallow. Despite his shortcomings as a father, it’s disheartening that he won’t get to witness the extraordinary man his son has become.
