The marketing for The Mandalorian and Grogu has definitely sparked a lot of debate. Lucasfilm is known for keeping Star Wars details under wraps, but some fans think they’ve been too secretive this time around. The initial ads revealed very little about the plot, and the Super Bowl commercial – a playful take on the classic Budweiser Clydesdales ads – really divided viewers. Even the newest trailer, though better than what we’ve seen so far, still doesn’t give away much of the story. We know Din Djarin is working with the New Republic and tracking down a Hutt, but that’s all we really know at this point.
Because Lucasfilm isn’t sharing many details about The Mandalorian and Grogu, fans have been looking for information elsewhere—and they’ve had some success. A recent passage in an official 2024 Star Wars book might reveal the true nature of Din’s mission in the show. It seems the mission is connected to a program inspired by real-world historical events from the New Republic era.
Din Djarin Is Hunting Down Old Imperials for the New Republic

A detail from the book Star Wars: The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire reveals the New Republic used a special 76-card deck for tracking down Imperial fugitives, with each card featuring the last known image of a wanted criminal. This connects to The Mandalorian and Grogu because a trailer shows Colonel Ward (Sigourney Weaver) giving Din Djarin a playing card with a blank space where a face should be. Ward tells Djarin and Grogu they will hunt down “every bad guy in your deck of cards” and eliminate them. While it’s not entirely clear from the trailer, the dialogue suggests Djarin will be tasked with taking out multiple targets, not just one.
Colonel Ward’s statement in the trailer – that the mission is “about preventing another war” – makes sense when you consider what happened after the Galactic Civil War. As seen in shows like The Mandalorian, even after the Empire’s defeat in Return of the Jedi, Imperial forces didn’t just disappear. They continued to operate, hoping to regain power while the New Republic was still getting established. These remaining Imperial groups still had considerable resources, making them a serious danger. To prevent another large-scale war, the New Republic is actively hunting down and neutralizing high-ranking Imperial officers who could cause trouble.
Looking back, it’s clear the New Republic didn’t fully succeed in its goals. History shows that some of the people they were tracking – like Rae Sloane, Brendol Hux, and Enric Pryde – actually went on to become important figures in the First Order. And since the First Order ended up being the big bad guys in the sequel movies, it means the New Republic didn’t stop another war from happening. It doesn’t change my hope that Din Djarin will achieve what he’s trying to do with Grogu, but it definitely makes the story a little sadder knowing the sacrifices the Rebels made didn’t lead to lasting peace.
As a fan, I found something really cool while watching the Mandalorian and Grogu trailer. It reminded me of something that actually happened in real life! Apparently, during the Iraq War, the US military made playing cards with the faces of people they were trying to find. If they didn’t have a picture of someone, they just used an outline of a face – and that’s exactly what Ward hands Din Djarin in the trailer. It’s a small detail, but it’s fascinating how it connects to real-world history, separate from everything else going on in Star Wars.
How Do the Hutts Fit Into The Mandalorian and Grogu?

As a big fan, I’m really excited about the new season of The Mandalorian and Grogu. It’s not just about the New Republic dealing with the leftover Empire, though. The marketing is really pushing the Hutts’ involvement, which is awesome! Din Djarin is going to run into a bunch of Jabba’s family – the Twins we met in The Book of Boba Fett, and even Rotta, Jabba’s son who was a little kid in the Clone Wars movie way back in 2008. The latest trailer gave us a peek at what’s happening, but honestly, it’s still a mystery how big a role the Hutts will play. I’ve heard whispers about Din going on a mission to rescue Rotta from a bounty hunter named Embo, but so far, nothing’s been confirmed. It’s definitely adding another layer of intrigue!
It’s possible Din Djarin will turn to the Hutts for help. The blank sabacc card he receives suggests he knows the name of someone he’s looking for, but not what they look like. The Hutts, while not directly controlled by the Empire, had a working relationship with them, allowing them to maintain their power. This means the Hutts likely have information about people who served the Empire. Given Djarin is hunting down former Imperial soldiers, he might believe the Hutts can provide clues about his next target’s location.
Okay, so here’s a thought about the new season: I’m starting to wonder if the Hutts are more involved than we think. Din Djarin mentions “gangsters” right alongside “war criminals” when talking about his bounty targets, and it makes me suspect they’re working with the remnants of the Empire. Maybe they’re helping the Imperials get back on their feet to restore the old order. Plus, those mysterious Twins? Their ominous words in the trailer definitely suggest they’re going to be major trouble for Din and Grogu. It could be a classic setup for a really compelling conflict!
It will be fascinating to see how the Hutts are involved in the next season of The Mandalorian and Grogu, especially Rotta. Some fans believe Rotta and Din Djarin will become allies after initially fighting in the gladiator arena, which could lead to a great storyline for Jabba’s son. Director Jon Favreau has hinted that Rotta wants to establish his own identity, despite living in the shadow of his well-known father. It’s possible Rotta will be a different kind of Hutt – one who’s more heroic and helps Djarin find the people listed on the sabacc cards.
