One IT: Welcome To Derry Star Didn’t Hold Back Season Finale Complaints: ‘No, I’m Not Happy’

Andy Muschietti’s IT movies were incredibly popular and scary, so fans were excited when he announced Welcome to Derry, a show set in the same universe. The show, available on HBO Max, just finished its first season, and actress Taylour Paige has spoken out about being disappointed with how her character, Charlotte, ended up. Here’s a look at what happened.

The HBO series Welcome to Derry quickly gained attention, largely due to its shocking and violent opening episode. The eight-part season included numerous references and connections to the original movies, particularly involving the Hanlon family. The family chose to remain in Derry to fight against Pennywise, and actress Page recently shared her candid thoughts about the show in an interview with Deadline, stating:

To be honest, I’m really not satisfied with how this was written. It just doesn’t seem believable. The story says people forget things in Derry, but I don’t think that explanation makes sense.

Paige clearly thinks Rose and Leroy are being reckless. She’s upset they chose to remain in Derry, especially after everything terrible that happened there. Although she acknowledges that the town’s strange power causes people to forget events, she still doesn’t understand why they’d stay, considering most parents would want to protect their child from something so frightening, like the terrifying clown they encountered.

The finale of Welcome to Derry cleverly linked back to Andy Muschietti’s It films, notably through the Hanlon family. We see Leroy as an elderly man in It, and his son, Mike Hanlon, as a key member of the Losers’ Club. The episode also revealed that Marge is Richie Tozier’s mother, and included a brief appearance by Sophia Lillis as Bev Marsh. Later, Taylour Paige discussed the Hanlon family’s decision to remain in Derry following the events of the show’s first season.

I hoped for a better outcome for Charlotte and her family, but it felt unrealistic to expect her to simply leave. In 1962, it was uncommon for women to leave unhappy marriages. It wasn’t a typical choice at the time, and many women felt obligated to sacrifice their own happiness to maintain the family unit.

Paige explained her character’s final decision by referencing the setting of Welcome to Derry. She argued that leaving town with her child in the 1960s would have been dangerous. Combined with the Hanlon family’s strong sense of responsibility, this led them to stay in Derry and continue fighting Pennywise.
