A highly-rated Xbox 360 game from 2008 has quietly launched on a new platform after nearly 20 years. Many consider 2008 to be a peak year for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with major releases like Grand Theft Auto IV, Fallout 3, Gears of War 2, and Call of Duty: World at War. It was a fantastic year for gaming overall, and also saw the release of a groundbreaking early indie game that helped pave the way for independent developers.
Back in 2008, the acclaimed indie puzzle game Braid, created by Jonathan Blow and his studio Number None, quickly became a standout title, earning a 93 on Metacritic and widespread praise as one of the best games of its generation. Recently, an updated version called Braid Anniversary Edition was released with enhanced graphics, audio, and new content. Now, this remastered version has unexpectedly launched on the Nintendo Switch 2. While the original Xbox 360 game was already playable on Switch and therefore compatible with the Switch 2, this new release is specifically optimized for the system with additional improvements. Plus, owners of the original Switch version can upgrade to the Switch 2 version for only $3, a significant discount from the usual $20 price.
A Pioneering Indie Game
This game is a top-notch puzzle platformer where you bend time to overcome challenges. You play as a character traveling through different worlds to find a princess, all while confronting your own past memories and regrets.
After 18 years, Braid still feels fantastic, and this remaster only enhances that. Indie games tend to age better than big-budget titles because they focus less on cutting-edge technology, meaning they don’t become outdated as quickly. In fact, Braid could easily be made today and still feel relevant. The game’s length hasn’t changed either – it’s still a relatively short experience, taking around five or six hours to complete, even on the Nintendo Switch.
