Anime is known for its epic fights, like those in Dragon Ball, and exciting adventures, such as One Piece. But many shows are also incredibly funny! Series like Great Teacher Onizuka, Bocchi The Rock, Gintama, Konosuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World, and Kaguya-Sama: Love is War have consistently delivered laughs. Sadly, even the funniest shows eventually end. A popular manga recently finished its final chapter, and the last volume will be released this month, marking the end of the series.
Unlike Sakamoto Days, which features a former assassin running a convenience store, Mr. Nietzsche in the Convenience Store is simply a hilarious story set in that location. Created by Matsukoma and Hashimoto, the manga began in 2013 and has been running for thirteen years, following its characters as they navigate everyday life. The series centers around Matsukoma—who shares a name with the manga’s author—as he trains a new employee, Tomoharu Nii, in the art of running the store. The final chapter was released last month, and the last volume is available today, February 27th. While the series’ humor has kept it going for so long, there’s another interesting element that fans might not expect.
Mr. Nietsche’s Wild Ride

It’s surprising that Mr. Nietzsche in the Convenience Store, a popular manga, didn’t get an anime adaptation – instead, it was made into a live-action TV series! The ten-episode series, which aired in 2015, brought the manga’s funny, everyday stories to life. Although it’s not currently available in North America, the manga’s conclusion might generate renewed interest in Matsukoma’s work. With nearly three million copies sold, it’s clear many readers have enjoyed this unique take on the convenience store experience.
Crunchyroll streamed the live-action series in Japan, but it wasn’t available in Western countries. The show, Mr. Nietzsche in the Convenience Store, centers around Matsukoma, a cheerful convenience store employee, and his new coworker, Tomoharu Nii, who everyone calls Nietzsche-sensei. Matsukoma tries to share his positive attitude with Nietzsche-sensei, but his lessons don’t seem to make an impact – much like the philosopher Nietzsche, the character has a rather pessimistic view of life.
The popular anime and manga series Sakamoto Days, set in a convenience store, is nearing the end of its story. The series has been a hit in Weekly Shonen Jump and is currently being adapted into an anime available on Netflix. A second season of the anime is already planned, meaning even more adventures for Taro Sakamoto are on the way.
