One of DreamWorks’ Most Popular Animated Trilogies Is Back on Streaming (And All Together on the Same Service)

For the past three decades, Disney and Pixar have been the leaders in animated movies, but DreamWorks Animation is a close second. Known for franchises like *Shrek*, *How to Train Your Dragon*, and *Kung Fu Panda*, DreamWorks has created many incredibly popular films. These films continue to perform well, consistently becoming hits when added to streaming platforms.

Starting in October, Hulu added all three original *Madagascar* movies – released in 2005, 2008, and 2012 – to its streaming library. Now, Hulu subscribers can watch the entire *Madagascar* trilogy in one place.

While you can watch the first three *Madagascar* movies on Hulu, the entire series isn’t available there. The 2014 spinoff, *Penguins of Madagascar*, is currently missing. Though it wasn’t as popular as the main *Madagascar* films—focusing on the penguins as secret agents trying to save the world—many fans now consider it the funniest and best movie in the franchise.

What’s Next for Madagascar?

The *Madagascar* movies were huge hits for DreamWorks, with each film earning more money than the last and collectively bringing in almost $2 billion worldwide. However, the 2014 spin-off, *Penguins of Madagascar*, didn’t perform as well, earning $373 million globally.

I was so excited when I heard they were planning a fourth *Madagascar* movie, even before *Penguins* came out! But when *Penguins* didn’t do so well, and DreamWorks Animation went through some big changes in 2015, the fourth movie got put on hold. It’s been almost ten years now, and we haven’t heard a single thing about *Madagascar 4*. Honestly, it’s making a lot of us fans worry that the series might be over for good.

These days, it’s rare for a popular franchise to truly end. DreamWorks recently released a live-action *How to Train Your Dragon* movie and is already working on *Shrek 5*. Considering how well the original *Madagascar* films did in theaters, it would be more shocking if the studio *didn’t* revisit that series eventually.

It’s also possible DreamWorks has too many other projects going on right now, and a new *Madagascar* movie might be put on hold for a while. Without an official statement from the studio, it’s hard to say what the future holds for the series.
