Marvel Comics is famous for its powerful, god-like weapons. While Mjolnir and the Infinity Gauntlet are incredibly popular—thanks to the Marvel movies—they’re just a few examples. One lesser-known, but still impressive, weapon is the Golden Mace of Hercules. Created by the gods specifically for the son of Zeus, Hercules has wielded it in battle for thousands of years. Though not as overwhelmingly powerful as Mjolnir, the Golden Mace is a key part of Hercules’s arsenal and has been crucial in defeating numerous villains.
It’s a comic book tradition: powerful weapons eventually get broken. Captain America’s shield has been damaged many times, and even mighty items like Mjolnir and the Infinity Gauntlet (though I still think of those powerful objects as ‘Gems,’ the movies have made ‘Gauntlet’ the standard) have been destroyed. Hercules’s Golden Mace was often said to be unbreakable, so naturally, it met its end. What makes its destruction interesting isn’t just that it happened, but who destroyed it: Wolverine. In Wolverine (Vol. 8) #18, Logan and Hercules fought, and the Golden Mace was broken in a conflict that was much larger than their personal battle.
The Origin of the Golden Mace Held the Key to Its Destruction

The recent Wolverine series (Vol. 8) hasn’t been particularly strong, which unfortunately reflects the overall state of the X-Men comics right now. While 2024’s ‘From the Ashes’ aimed to revitalize the X-Men by revisiting old ideas, Wolverine took a different approach. It introduced the concept of Adamantine, an ancient, sentient magical metal used by gods to forge incredibly powerful weapons like the Golden Mace. Adamantium, the metal famously bonded to Wolverine’s skeleton, is actually derived from Adamantine, created by humans to copy its properties – and this magical metal resents the imitation.
The Adamantine, a powerful substance, could control anyone with adamantium inside them. It manipulated several of Wolverine’s enemies – including Cyber, Lady Deathstrike, Constrictor, and Donald Pierce – with the help of the dangerous Romulus. The Adamantine even revealed its origins to Wolverine, mentioning it was the source material for the Golden Mace – a clear hint at future events that came to fruition in Wolverine (Vol. 8) #18. Later, the Adamantine took control of Hercules, leading to a battle between the two heroes.
Hercules is incredibly strong, comparable to the Hulk, and possesses seemingly limitless power. While Wolverine has fought the Hulk repeatedly, his incredible healing and unbreakable skeleton have allowed him to withstand devastating attacks. When Wolverine fights Hercules, their battles usually end in a draw. However, Wolverine eventually realized Hercules’ strength came from a magical mace, and he was able to use his adamantium claws to destroy it, effectively ending the fight.
The Adamantine claims to be superior to adamantium, even calling adamantium a “fake” metal. However, Wolverine recently shattered the Golden Mace – a weapon that had remained undamaged for thousands of years – which suggests the Adamantine might be exaggerating its strength. While incredibly powerful, the Adamantine appears to have an inflated sense of its own abilities. The fact that Wolverine has broken free from its control hints that he’s the only one who can interfere with its plans – though those plans remain unclear, making this issue a surprisingly good read.
The Destruction of the Golden Mace Kicks Off the Next Phase of the Battle Against the Adamantine

Look, I’ll be honest, this Wolverine run (volume 8) hasn’t really clicked with me, and there are a few reasons why. The Adamantine story arc has been the one bright spot, though even that isn’t flawless. But this latest issue? The fight is amazing! Seeing Wolverine go up against Hercules was fantastic, and when Logan actually broke the Golden Mace? Wow! It was a total shock and feels like a major shift in his battle with the Adamantine. It really makes this issue stand out from the rest of the series.
While not as well-known as Thor’s hammer, the destruction of Hercules’s Golden Mace is a significant event. The fact that the Adamantine metal was used to control Hercules highlights its immense power, and it’s powerful enough to attract the attention of even the gods – as Athena appears after the battle. This event has clearly raised the stakes, and the gods are now taking notice of the Adamantine.
