The 2020s have seen a surge in popular animated movies, with recent hits like Zootopia 2, KPop Demon Hunters, and Inside Out 2 grabbing headlines. But beyond those well-known films, many other animated movies have also won over audiences. Now, one of the most highly praised animated films of the decade is getting a sequel – and could even become a whole series of movies.
Dreamworks’ animated film, The Wild Robot, came out in 2024 and, despite not being a huge blockbuster, did well in theaters thanks to good reviews and people recommending it. Now, The Wrap reports that Dreamworks is making a sequel, The Wild Robot Escapes. If the sequel is also well-received, this could become a long-running series, though it will have different directors.
The Wild Robot Can Be A Big Franchise, Even Slightly Under The Radar

Despite not receiving widespread publicity, The Wild Robot proved to be a box office success. Made with a budget of $78 million, the film earned over $334 million worldwide – a significant profit. If the next installment performs similarly, future films in the series could be even more financially successful.
The sequel will have plenty of source material, as it’s based on the second book in Peter Brown’s popular Wild Robot series, titled The Wild Robot Escapes. This will also be the movie’s title. With a third book, The Wild Robot Protects, already written, there’s a clear path to potentially create a complete movie trilogy.
Good news for fans: Chris Sanders, the writer of How to Train Your Dragon, is returning for the sequel’s script. However, a new director will be taking charge of the film. Troy Quane, who co-directed the excellent Nimona on Netflix, will be directing alongside Heidi Jo Gilbert, known for her work on Wild Robot.
The upcoming movie, Wild Robot Escapes, will likely bring back most of the original cast. Lupita Nyong’o will reprise her role as Roz the robot, and Pedro Pascal, Bill Nighy, and Kit Connor are also expected to return. The first film featured the talented Catherine O’Hara, who sadly passed away.
No release date has been mentioned, but hopefully, more details will be released soon.
