The Norwegian film Troll is about a massive creature that’s woken up after being trapped inside a mountain in Dovre for a thousand years. It’s now heading towards Norway’s capital, destroying everything in its way. The question is, how do you stop a monster that everyone thought was just a legend?
Critics Loved Troll, While Audiences Thought It Was Cheesy
I have to say, even though it didn’t immediately explode with audiences, Troll really impressed me – and the critics clearly agreed! It’s got a fantastic 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes, which speaks for itself. What I loved was how it took these deep roots in Norwegian mythology and blended them with amazing action and visuals, creating something totally fresh in the monster movie genre. One reviewer, Aaron Phillips from But Why Tho?, put it perfectly: it’s a big, entertaining monster movie that really grabbed his attention, and he’s hoping for more from this studio, just like me! The pacing was perfect, the visuals were stunning, and the mythology was brilliantly woven throughout – it’s definitely a film worth checking out.
Aaron Neuwirth from We Live Entertainment praised the film, noting that the director successfully used techniques from movies like King Kong and Godzilla to create suspense, deliver convincing effects, and maintain a good balance between seriousness and fun. However, general audiences weren’t as impressed. One viewer felt the movie heavily borrowed from other films, while another criticized the story for lacking emotional depth. They specifically mentioned a lack of empathy towards the troll, poor character development, and a missing moral or lesson, stating that the characters only wanted to eliminate the creature despite its apparent intelligence and feelings.
