One of Shonen’s Strongest Heroes to Return in New Sequel After 24 Years (First Look Revealed)

As a huge fan of action-packed anime, I’m absolutely thrilled to hear that one of the all-time strongest heroes is returning in a brand new sequel! It’s been 24 years since we first met this character, and the timing couldn’t be better. This year has been incredible for the genre, with so many fresh series popping up, and it’s amazing to see older favorites getting a second life with updated versions. It’s a really nostalgic and exciting time to be an anime fan!

I remember when Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple was huge – the anime and manga were really popular about 20 years ago. But things went quiet after the manga finished in 2014. Now, 12 years later, and 24 years after it all began, a sequel has been announced! The series creator, Shun Matsuena, even shared a first look, which you can check out below.

Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple Sequel Announced After 12 Years

Shun Matsuena is bringing back Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple with a new series, 2 Masters Arc, after a 12-year hiatus. The creator hints that beloved characters from the original manga will return, and the first chapter will be available on Shogakukan’s Sunday Webry platform on March 25th. Currently, there are no plans to release the sequel internationally.

It’s exciting to see the return of this series with a new sequel, especially now that many popular anime and manga from the 2000s are making comebacks. While we’ve seen remakes and movies for other classics, a brand new manga sequel is unusual. Fans are eager to see where the story goes with this new installment of Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple, and many are hoping it will lead to a new anime series as well.

What Is Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple?

The popular series Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple actually started as a remake! Creator Shun Matsuena originally published Tatakae! Ryozanpaku Shijo Saikyo no Deshi a couple of years earlier. This explains why older online searches might show two different appearances for the series. Most fans, however, probably remember the official anime adaptation best.

Originally released in 2006, Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple consists of a 50-episode anime series and an 11-episode OVA. The anime finished airing before the manga was complete, and its streaming rights became complicated after Funimation shut down. Now, you can watch this classic story about a student learning martial arts from numerous masters on Netflix.
