Ever since Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012, they’ve released a few new Star Wars movies and have more planned, starting with The Mandalorian & Grogu next summer. But many fans know that Disney has also announced several films that were ultimately cancelled. One of the most talked-about was Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, which Patty Jenkins was set to direct. Announced at a Disney event in 2020 with a planned release in December 2023, the movie never actually came out in theaters. However, recent reports suggest it might now be headed to a streaming service.
The website MyTimeToShineHello reports (through The Direct) that the planned Rogue Squadron movie is now being developed as a TV series for Disney+. Details are scarce, and there’s no news on when it might be released. While this information should be viewed cautiously, it’s exciting to think Rogue Squadron could return in a new format.
Star Wars Has Been Shifting Away From TV Shows

The recent buzz about a new Rogue Squadron movie is interesting because it seems to go against Lucasfilm’s current plans for Star Wars. For a while, the studio focused on making live-action shows for Disney+, but now they appear to be shifting their attention back to theatrical films. While Season 2 of Ahsoka has finished filming, the next Star Wars projects heading to cinemas are The Mandalorian & Grogu and Star Wars: Starfighter. Kathleen Kennedy also revealed plans for several new movies at Star Wars Celebration Japan earlier this year, with no new live-action TV series announced.
Although new Star Wars shows and series, like the animated Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, are still planned for Disney+, the company may focus less on TV in the future. Disney reportedly told Andor creator Tony Gilroy that streaming isn’t performing as expected, suggesting a change in how they handle popular franchises like Star Wars. While Disney+ allowed for many different Star Wars and Marvel stories, it also led to an overload of content, making it difficult for fans to follow everything. To prioritize quality, Disney might produce fewer shows and movies overall.
Even if Lucasfilm slows down production a bit, it’s unlikely they’ve abandoned live-action Star Wars shows altogether. Similar to how Marvel continues to create series like Daredevil: Born Again, Lucasfilm will likely keep exploring new shows if the right circumstances arise. They’ve successfully adapted planned movies into TV series before, as seen with Obi-Wan Kenobi. The idea for Rogue Squadron, focusing on a team of X-wing pilots, could be particularly well-suited for a TV series. The episodic format would give the creators more time to develop the characters fully – something that’s often challenging to do in a movie.
Last year, director Patty Jenkins announced a new agreement with Lucasfilm to work on Rogue Squadron, meaning the project is still possible – especially now that her Wonder Woman 3 film has been cancelled. She may have even begun to think of it as a better fit for a TV series during development. If the rumors are true, it will be interesting to see if budget issues prevent Rogue Squadron from moving forward. Cost was a major reason why The Acolyte was cancelled, so it could be a hurdle for Rogue Squadron as well. A show like this would likely feature expensive space battles. Hopefully, Rogue Squadron will eventually happen in some form, as it has the potential to be something truly great.
