A select number of classic anime movies, appreciated by both critics and enthusiasts, will soon be returning to cinemas with an upgraded version. Although anime wasn’t as successful at the box office in the past, it has been recently with films like “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle.” However, it was less common for fans to demonstrate their support by attending screenings. Nevertheless, there are timeless gems that have remained popular over the years.
The movie “Perfect Blue,” initially released by the legendary director Satoshi Kon in 1998, is considered one of the greatest anime films ever made. Since then, fans have had multiple opportunities to watch it, but starting October 3rd, GKIDS will be re-releasing this classic in selected theaters as part of a special screening event. What makes it even more appealing is that the film will be presented in a stunning 4K remaster.
What Is Perfect Blue?
At Anime NYC 2025, GKIDS revealed that the iconic anime film Perfect Blue will hit U.S. theaters starting October 3rd, featuring a stunning 4K remaster. Renowned director Satoshi Kon, who is also behind masterpieces like Tokyo Godfathers, Paranoia Agent, Paprika, and others, directed this film. Adapted from Yoshikazu Takeuchi’s novel Perfect Blue: Complete Metamorphosis, the screenplay was penned by Sadayuki Mura. With its captivating narrative and mind-bending visuals, Perfect Blue left a lasting impression on viewers. Given the remaster, this is definitely an event not to be missed in cinemas.
The movie chronicles the journey of a singer aiming to switch to acting, but instead encounters various traumatic experiences. GKIDS previews Perfect Blue by describing it this way: “Mima Kirigoe, once a popular singer, ventures into acting and stars in a drama featuring a startling assault scene, as well as publishing an explicit nude photobook. Her transformation into an actress captivates the public, yet causes discomfort among her fans, management, and even herself, as she grapples with the swift change from her days as a pop idol.
The synopsis hints that Perfect Blue becomes increasingly dark and intense as it unfolds, with a stalker pursuing Mima, while a screenwriter and a photographer are successively murdered. This leaves her questioning if she might be developing a multiple personality, mirroring the character she portrays in the drama. Moreover, ‘the other Mima’, her former pop idol persona who was supposed to have retired, suddenly reappears before her. Over the years, Perfect Blue has been a significant influence on various pop culture productions, so if you haven’t seen it yet, this is your chance to finally watch it.
