LEGO, a toy company from Denmark, began in 1932 with the idea that children learn best by building and playing creatively. For decades, LEGO focused on simple, imaginative construction. But in the late 1990s, the company changed course by partnering with Lucasfilm to create LEGO Star Wars in 1999, timed with the release of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. What began as a small collection of sets has become LEGO’s biggest licensed theme, with over 900 sets released by 2026, and the partnership continuing through at least 2032. Within this vast collection, a few sets have become highly sought-after collector’s items, prized for their intricate designs and quality construction.
As a huge LEGO and Star Wars fan, I was really interested to see the recent auction results for the LEGO Star Wars Trade Federation MTT (set 7662). This set originally retailed for around $100 back in 2007, but recently someone snagged it at auction for $725! Now, BrickEconomy estimates a complete, unopened version is worth closer to $1,250, so that buyer got a fantastic deal. It’s a pretty impressive set too – with over 1,300 pieces, it’s about 16 inches long and 10 inches tall, and comes with a whole army of Battle Droids and a Droideka. That’s why so many LEGO and Star Wars collectors consider it one of the best sets LEGO ever made.
Why Is the Trade Federation MTT LEGO Set So Beloved By Star Wars Fans?

The 7662 LEGO set is famous for its clever construction. It features a unique exterior gear that triggers an internal mechanism, launching Battle Droids through the front hatch – just like a memorable scene from The Phantom Menace. It also includes nine doors that open separately, a sliding compartment for droids at the back, and hidden wheels for moving it around. Considering it was sold at a typical price for a large LEGO playset at the time, its detailed mechanics and overall size were remarkably impressive.
Reddit user Qiznos323 was thrilled with the finished model, saying it was even bigger and better than expected and a great addition to their collection. Another user, CaptainRex2000, called it their all-time favorite LEGO set, having purchased it for a special birthday in 2021 and still loving it years later. This positive reaction is common among collectors, who particularly appreciate the set’s focus on realism. As one user, SpainbutwithoutaS, pointed out, it avoids including extra, unnecessary figures and provides plenty of battle droids to properly fill the vehicle, prioritizing accuracy over simply adding features for marketing purposes.

A lot of the fondness for the 7662 LEGO set comes from comparing it to later versions. In 2014, LEGO released a redesigned Multi-Troop Transport (set 75058) with nearly twice as many pieces, but it included far fewer Battle Droids, replaced the original’s mechanical deployment system with spring-loaded launchers, and was much smaller overall. Fans weren’t happy. One Reddit user, PHAT_BOOTY, said the 2013 remake was a disappointment, noting that LEGO had set a high standard and then failed to meet it. The 7662 was special because it accurately recreated a large military transport capable of carrying over a hundred droids. Collector Scharaufabagel pointed out that any future version would likely only include a handful of droids. Since the 7662 was discontinued almost twenty years ago, LEGO has generally focused on smaller, simpler versions of vehicles from Episode I, rather than the detailed recreations that made the 7662 so memorable.
