The thriller The Grey, featuring a standout performance by Liam Neeson, will soon be removed from its current streaming service before the new year.
The action movie The Grey will no longer be available on Pluto TV after December 31st. It first premiered at the Butt-Numb-A-Thon film festival in Austin, Texas, back in 2011, and then had a broader release in theaters in January 2012.
I was completely captivated by The Grey. It’s a really intense story about the survivors of a plane crash who have to fight for their lives against wolves, their own injuries, and the harsh Alaskan wilderness as they try to get back home. Liam Neeson is incredible as John Ottway, the group’s leader – many are calling it the best performance of his career! And the cast is fantastic overall, with great actors like Frank Grillo, Dermot Mulroney, and Dallas Roberts all contributing to this gripping film.
While audiences gave The Grey a lukewarm 61% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, professional critics were much more impressed. The film currently has an 80% ‘Certified Fresh’ score on the site, with reviewers highlighting its beautiful visuals, surprising emotional depth, and thought-provoking themes, along with a powerful performance by Liam Neeson.
Strong reviews really boosted The Grey, making it a big success at the box office. Despite being made with a modest $25 million budget, the thriller earned over three times that amount, grossing $81.2 million in theaters.
The Grey Sparked Controversy After Its Release
Despite being a critical and commercial hit, The Grey sparked controversy. Soon after its release, animal rights activists urged people not to see the film because it used real wolf carcasses caught in traps as props, and because the actors, including the lead, reportedly ate wolf meat stew as part of their preparation for the roles.
Neeson remembered the dish tasting strongly of meat, and said it apparently made some of his fellow actors sick. He joked that as an Irishman, he was accustomed to unusual stews and could handle it, adding that he’d happily eat it if it just had plenty of carrots and onions.

Liam Neeson wasn’t the only one facing criticism. An animal welfare organization urged fans to boycott the film The Grey, claiming the wolves used in production were mistreated. They stated Neeson’s support for animal kindness didn’t align with the film’s alleged actions, and strongly advised people to avoid seeing it. Reports at the time, including coverage by The Guardian, questioned whether any wolves were actually harmed during filming.
The Grey is currently available to stream for free on Pluto TV until Dec. 31.
