Recent video game adaptations of The Lord of the Rings have been hit or miss. While older titles like The Return of the King and Shadow of Mordor were well-received, some newer games haven’t lived up to expectations. Gollum, in particular, was widely considered a poor release, and even Tales of the Shire, while enjoyed by some, didn’t fully satisfy many fans. However, not all recent Lord of the Rings games have been failures.
The 2024 survival crafting game Return to Moria received mixed reviews when it first launched, but it’s become popular with a dedicated group of players on Steam. While many new games come and go, Return to Moria has steadily gained a following, especially among Lord of the Rings fans. Now, players will be able to experience even more content with a major new expansion. Return to Moria has had smaller downloadable content packs before, but those were mostly focused on cosmetic items. Free Range Games recently announced that the Durin’s Folk DLC, revealed earlier this year, will be released in less than a month!
Return to Moria Sets Release Date for First Major Expansion, Durin’s Folk
The Durin’s Folk expansion has been in development for some time. After its initial announcement at San Diego Comic-Con in July, we’ve received a few updates here and there. Now, a brand new trailer has revealed the official release date: November 18th! This first major expansion for the Lord of the Rings survival crafting game promises exciting new content. You can watch the Durin’s Folk trailer below to get a preview.
The latest update for Return to Moria adds a new chapter to the game’s story, giving players more content to experience. It also introduces the ability to rescue and recruit non-player characters, which should help address balance concerns players had when playing solo. Beyond that, the update includes new multiplayer expeditions, fresh areas to discover, and improvements to the game’s economy at the end-game.
The new Durin’s Folk update adds over 20 hours of gameplay to Return to Moria, which is great news for a well-received Lord of the Rings game. While the initial game received mixed reviews, it’s become popular with players who enjoy survival crafting games on Steam. This expansion could attract even more players to explore and rebuild Moria.

You can play Return to Moria on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and players on all platforms can play together. The Durin’s Folk expansion releases on November 18th and you can add it to your wishlist now. While the exact price isn’t known yet, it’s expected to be between $4.99 (like previous cosmetic packs) and $29.99 (the price of the main game).
