One of the Best Superhero Movies of the 2000s is Headed to Peacock

Let’s be real, when I think of superhero movies, my mind immediately goes to Marvel or classics like Superman and Justice League. And yeah, Marvel is huge, and DC’s given us some great films, but there are so many other awesome superhero stories out there! I’m so excited that one of my favorite superhero movies from the 2000s – a real hidden gem about a less-known hero – is finally coming to Peacock. It’s a movie I think a lot of people will really enjoy discovering!

The 2004 film Hellboy is a beloved superhero movie that breaks the mold of traditional heroes. While based on the Dark Horse Comics character, it wasn’t a well-known name when it first came out. However, the movie was both a critical and commercial success, and it really made a splash in the superhero genre. You’ll be able to stream it on Peacock starting March 31st.

Hellboy and Its Sequel Are Great Movies (But the Reboots Leave Much to Be Desired)

Guillermo del Toro wrote and directed the first Hellboy movie, which stars Ron Perlman as the demon-turned-investigator. Selma Blair, Jeffrey Tambor, Karel Roden, Rupert Evans, and John Hurt also feature in the film. Based on the comic Hellboy: Seed of Destruction, the story follows Hellboy as he works with the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense to stop a resurrected sorcerer from destroying the world—and using Hellboy himself to do it. Critics praised the movie, especially del Toro’s stunning visuals and his ability to bring the comic book to life. Its success in theaters led to a sequel, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, in 2008.

Both The Golden Army and the original Hellboy movie were well-received by critics and did well in theaters. Plans for a sequel to The Golden Army ultimately fell through, but Hellboy was rebooted in 2019 with David Harbour in the lead role, alongside stars like Milla Jovovich and Ian McShane. Unfortunately, the reboot wasn’t as successful. Despite a $50 million budget, it only earned $55 million at the box office and received negative reviews. Critics and audiences generally felt it didn’t capture what made the first two Hellboy films so popular.

Another attempt to reboot Hellboy, titled Hellboy: The Crooked Man, came out in 2024 with a completely new cast, but it wasn’t successful. Released directly for streaming and rentals, it only earned $2 million worldwide in ticket sales. Although critics liked it slightly more than the 2019 reboot, it still received mostly negative reviews. Like its predecessor, it didn’t reach the level of imagination and excitement seen in the first two Hellboy films, which remain highly regarded as some of the best superhero movies of all time.
