2025 was a phenomenal year for movies, with several films achieving massive success. The animated film Ne Zha 2 made history as the first animated movie to earn over $2 billion worldwide, and A Minecraft Movie set a new record for video game adaptations with $958 million in earnings. Other big hits like Avatar: Fire and Ash, Jurassic World Rebirth, and Superman also performed exceptionally well at the box office. Now, most of these films are available to watch at home through streaming services, though one recently left Peacock and is currently unavailable to stream.
The live-action How to Train Your Dragon movie was available on Peacock last October, but it’s no longer streaming there. The film, based on the popular 2010 animated movie, successfully brought the story of Hiccup and Toothless to life. It actually earned more at the box office than the second animated film, becoming the most successful movie in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise with a worldwide gross of $636 million. Currently, you won’t be able to find the live-action movie on any streaming service, but it will be added to Netflix on February 10th, along with the first two animated films which arrive on February 1st.
How To Train Your Dragon Is One of the Best Live-Action Remakes Ever
ComicBook praised the live-action How to Train Your Dragon as a model for how remakes should be done, and that opinion remains true months later. Directed by the original creator, Dean DeBlois, the film is remarkably faithful to the source material, recreating the story with a nearly shot-for-shot approach. It successfully blends fantasy and reality thanks to impressive CGI and visuals that make the dragons feel genuinely dangerous and the Viking world of Berk feel authentic. The acting is excellent, the aerial scenes are thrilling and believable, and the music powerfully supports the emotional impact of the story.
The live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon is remarkably well-made and has been well-received, even by fans of the original animated film. While critics gave it a solid 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – slightly lower than the original’s near-perfect 99% – audiences loved it even more, with a 97% score compared to the animated version’s 91%. This success is encouraging for the upcoming live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon 2, which will star Mason Thames as Hiccup, Nico Parker as Astrid, and Gerard Butler as Stoick. It’s currently scheduled for release in theaters on June 11, 2027.
What’s New on Peacock?
Peacock subscribers are disappointed to see the live-action How to Train Your Dragon leave the platform, but there’s still plenty to enjoy. The streaming service offers a variety of popular titles, including family favorites like The Boss Baby and Trolls, plus comedies and classics like The ‘Burbs (1989) and The Longest Yard.
