The 1990s gave us iconic science fiction movies like Jurassic Park, The Matrix, and Terminator 2. However, not every sci-fi film from that era was a success. Now, Paramount+ users can watch one of the biggest sci-fi flops of the late ’90s, just before the release of its long-awaited sequel. It became available on the streaming service in January.
The classic sci-fi horror film Event Horizon became available on Paramount+ on January 1st, building anticipation for the upcoming comic book sequel, Event Horizon: Inferno, planned for April 2026. Directed by Paul Anderson and set in 2047, the movie follows a crew of astronauts—including Laurence Fishburne, Sam Neill, Kathleen Quinlan, and Joely Richardson—who are sent to investigate a spaceship that mysteriously reappeared after vanishing seven years prior. While now considered a cult favorite, Event Horizon wasn’t initially successful. It flopped at the box office, earning only $42 million despite a $60 million budget, and received largely negative reviews, with a 26% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Event Horizon Is a Criminally Underrated Sci-Fi Horror Cult Classic
When Event Horizon first came out in theaters, it wasn’t well-received. Critics called it a cheap, overly violent, and dull horror movie, and felt it didn’t succeed as a scary, adventurous, or science fiction film. Many felt the movie focused too much on visual effects and gore, and didn’t deliver on its potential to be genuinely suspenseful or intellectually stimulating.
Over time, opinions on Event Horizon have shifted, and it’s now seen by many as a hidden sci-fi treasure that didn’t get the appreciation it deserved initially. The film was remarkably innovative for its time, pioneering the concept of a “haunted house in space” with a level of darkness and intensity rarely seen in 90s sci-fi – and it executed this vision brilliantly. Event Horizon is a prime example of atmospheric sci-fi horror, masterfully building a tense, claustrophobic mood and delivering truly terrifying imagery and body horror that remains memorable long after viewing. Beyond its chilling atmosphere and nightmarish scenes set within a hellish dimension, the movie boasts impressive practical effects and sets that amplify the horror, alongside strong performances from the cast who create believable and compelling characters, grounding the film’s fantastical elements.
Although it wasn’t well-received when it first came out, the movie Event Horizon is now considered a groundbreaking and truly frightening horror film.
What’s New on Paramount+?
Throughout January, Paramount+ added a lot of fantastic movies, including the sci-fi horror film Event Horizon. Subscribers can also enjoy titles like 10 Cloverfield Lane, the original Scream trilogy, The Crow, and Zodiac, and even more great movies are coming next month in February.
