One of the Greatest Fantasy Movies of the ‘80s is Now Streaming For Free on Tubi

The 1980s were a fantastic time for movies, especially when it came to genres like action, horror, and science fiction. Many of these films became cultural touchstones and are still popular today, even after forty years. Fantasy films, in particular, really flourished during this decade, giving us classics like Willow, The Dark Crystal, and the beloved The Princess Bride. Now, one of the best fantasy movies from that era – and perhaps of all time – is available to watch for free this month on Tubi.

You can now watch The NeverEnding Story on Tubi! This beloved 1984 film, directed by Wolfgang Petersen and based on Michael Ende’s novel, isn’t a completely faithful adaptation of the book. However, it’s a truly wonderful and imaginative movie that takes viewers on a captivating and unforgettable adventure, and its themes still resonate with audiences today.

The NeverEnding Story is a Near Perfect Fantasy Film (Just Skip the Sequel)

In The NeverEnding Story, a boy named Bastian Balthazar Bux escapes to his school’s attic with a stolen book of the same name. As he reads, he’s drawn into the world of Fantasia and the journey of Atreyu, a young warrior trying to save the magical land from a mysterious darkness called the Nothing. The movie stars Noah Hathaway, Barret Oliver, Tami Stronach, Patricia Hayes, and other talented actors, and explores how stories can become real.

This is a wonderful and timeless fantasy story filled with magic and adventure. It’s perfect for families and really celebrates the power of imagination. Some of the best parts are when Atreyu flies with the Luck Dragon Falkor, and when Bastian realizes the story he’s reading is coming to life. The movie has a hopeful ending, hinting at more adventures for Bastian. However, the sequel isn’t very good and is best avoided.

Released in 1990, The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter failed to recapture the magic of the original, with only one returning cast member (Thomas Hill). It was poorly received by both audiences and critics, currently holding a 14% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Luckily, the first NeverEnding Story film is now streaming for free on Tubi this April, making it a perfect time to revisit this classic or experience it for the first time. While there’s been discussion about remaking the original, aiming for a more accurate adaptation of the book, those plans haven’t come to fruition – and many believe the original is unbeatable.
