A less conventional approach can be: Not every new thing surpasses the old, especially sequels. But in 2016, a horror movie sequel bucked the trend by outshining its precursor. That film is now available on Tubi after leaving Netflix last Friday, and it’s from the talented Mike Flanagan. Known for his significant contributions to the horror genre, Flanagan has been celebrated for his Netflix original horror series such as The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher. Flanagan’s body of work encompasses his 2011 debut feature film, Absentia, along with Hush, Doctor Sleep, and The Life of Chuck.
The remarkably effective horror movie, “Ouija: Origin of Evil” (from 2016), serves as a prequel to Stiles White’s 2014 “Ouija”, inspired by the Hasbro board game. This film became available on Tubi last Saturday, as part of Fox’s free streaming service’s offerings for August 2025. Known as one of the best horror sequels in history, this movie is highly recommended for any enthusiasts of horror films or fans of Mike Flanagan’s other projects.
The movie titled “Ouija: Origin of Evil,” set in 1960s Los Angeles, features Elizabeth Reaser as Alice Zander, a widowed mother to two daughters – Paulina (Annalise Basso), seen earlier in the original film as an elderly woman, and Doris (Lulu Wilson). In an attempt to boost her séance scam business, Alice introduces a Ouija board. Unfortunately, she invites genuine evil into her home, causing the family to face terrifying fears head-on, in a desperate effort to save Doris from being possessed by the ruthless spirit.
The film, titled “Ouija: Origin of Evil,” demonstrates outstanding quality within the horror genre, even surpassing many other sequels. This successful movie was spawned by the $100 million gross earned by its prequel, “Ouija.” Compared to its predecessor, “Ouija: Origin of Evil” showcases substantial improvements in various aspects such as acting, direction, and atmosphere, while minimizing the reliance on jump scares. These elements enabled it to effectively overcome the poor critical reception that its original counterpart received, with a mere 6% score on Rotten Tomatoes. “Ouija: Origin of Evil” has been highly praised, earning an 83% critics’ score and a consensus that reads, “Ouija: Origin of Evil manages to deliver a surprising and satisfying horror sequel that outshines its lackluster predecessor.
You can watch the movie “Ouija: Origin of Evil” for free on Tubi, while the 2014 version of “Ouija” can be streamed on Netflix.
