Roronoa Zoro was the first member to join Luffy’s crew and quickly became his most trusted ally. Initially, Zoro wasn’t interested in becoming a pirate; his ambition was to be recognized as the world’s greatest swordsman. He fights using a distinctive three-sword style, leaving opponents little opportunity to defend themselves. While incredibly skilled, Zoro realizes he isn’t the strongest swordsman yet. Driven to achieve his dream, he began his journey across the seas, seeking out Dracule Mihawk, the current title holder. However, before Zoro could reach Mihawk, he encountered the Marines and, unexpectedly, met Luffy.
Zoro’s early fight with Mihawk was a harsh wake-up call, revealing a massive gap in their abilities. This loss motivated him to become unbeatable, believing the future Pirate King needed the strongest swordsman at his side. Since then, Zoro has dedicated himself to rigorous training, determined to overcome every swordsman. He made significant progress during the time skip, learning Haki and later unlocking the powerful Conqueror’s Haki. Even with all his newfound strength, however, there are still seven swordsmen who remain beyond his reach.
7) Dracule Mihawk

Mihawk is currently still stronger than Zoro, although Zoro has gotten much closer in power. We haven’t seen the full extent of Mihawk’s abilities yet, but the final arc of the story will likely show us exactly why he’s considered the world’s greatest swordsman. Zoro needs to defeat Mihawk to earn that title himself, so a showdown between them is almost certain to happen.
6) Issho

Admiral Fujitora, also called Ishho, is incredibly powerful, mainly due to his Devil Fruit ability. He can control gravity with it, even summoning meteors by swinging his sword. Combined with his skill as a swordsman and his mastery of Haki, he was a dominant force during the events at Dressrosa.
5) Ethanbaron V. Nusjuro

The Straw Hat Pirates, the Giants, Emet, and all the residents of Egghead fought with everything they had to drive away the Five Elders. Everyone there has incredible, mysterious powers, including the ability to recover from any injury. Nusjuro, a devoted servant of Imu, shares this healing ability and can also transform into a skeletal horse. He’s also armed with an enormous sword, powerful enough to cut through the entire island of Egghead with a single swing, making him a truly frightening opponent.
4) Figarland Garling

Garling is a hugely powerful character in One Piece, currently serving as Supreme Commander of the Holy Knights and a member of the Five Elders – he took over from Saturn. Though his full abilities are still unknown, we saw a hint of his power during the God Valley flashback. Adding to his significance, Garling is also Shanks’ father, meaning he’s far stronger than most pirates.
3) Figarland Shamrock

Shanks has a twin brother who appears in the Elbaph Arc, immediately impressing everyone with his incredible power. This brother isn’t a typical swordsman; his sword is imbued with the power of a Devil Fruit, allowing it to transform into Cerberus, the three-headed monster from mythology. As a commander of the Holy Knights, he also likely has a powerful healing ability, allowing him to recover from almost any injury.
2) Silvers Rayleigh

Rayleigh, the trusted first mate of the Pirate King, journeyed across the globe and overcame countless obstacles. Despite not having a Devil Fruit power, he became legendary through his incredible Haki and skill with a sword. His reputation alone is enough to intimidate anyone. He’s a master of all types of Haki and famously trained Luffy during his two-year training period.
1) Shanks

Similar to Rayleigh, Shanks doesn’t rely on a Devil Fruit for his power; instead, his incredibly strong Haki makes him a formidable opponent. As one of the Four Emperors, Shanks is renowned for his abilities, but the full extent of his power remains a mystery. Currently, he’s shown the most powerful Haki of anyone, capable of overpowering an Admiral from a great distance. He learned a technique called Divine Departure from Roger, which proved devastating, as he destroyed the entire Kidd Pirates fleet with a single attack.
