Please be aware that this article contains spoilers from the One Piece manga! The current Elbaph Arc in One Piece is proving to be even more thrilling than fans expected. It begins right after the intense battle on Egghead, where the Marines, Admirals, and even the Five Elders corner the Straw Hat Pirates. The crew narrowly escapes and lands on Elbaph, only to encounter an even greater danger. Fans have anticipated the Straw Hats’ journey to Elbaph since the Little Garden Arc. After over twenty years of waiting, the legendary land of the Giants is everything it was promised to be. Sadly, the once-peaceful nation is now a battlefield, as the Holy Knights have arrived with plans to transform the Giants into puppets controlled by Imu, the enigmatic ruler of the world.
Gunko, a long-serving Holy Knight, has been secretly controlled by a villain for decades. Imu remains hidden within Pangea Castle, always handling threats from a distance. Now, this villain is causing destruction on Elbaph and has finally encountered Luffy. The most recent chapter ends with a huge cliffhanger, promising an epic battle next week, as shown in the preview.
One Piece Chapter 1178 Confirms The Battle Between Luffy and Imu

Each week, a preview of the next manga chapter is included in the physical copies of Weekly Shonen Jump sold in Japan. Manga editors write a short note to get fans excited. Unfortunately, these previews aren’t available to readers outside of Japan who use official apps like Manga Plus and Shonen Jump. Recently, a popular X (formerly Twitter) account, @pewpiece, shared a translation of one of these previews, hinting at an upcoming battle with Imu. The preview’s text reads, “Domination (Imu) or Freedom (Nika). The one who will shake the world is…”
It continues, “The Straw Hat Crew is advancing rapidly, but the one who stands in their way is…!?”
Watching the story unfold, it’s become clear that Luffy, as the personification of freedom and the Sun God Nika, is on a direct collision course with Imu. Imu seems to represent the opposite – a centuries-long force of control and suppression. Honestly, this showdown feels like it’s happening faster than anyone predicted. What’s even more concerning is that Imu isn’t just after Luffy; they’re also targeting Loki, who possesses the incredible power of the Dragon-Dragon Fruit, specifically the Niddhoggr form. This battle isn’t just about them, though; the future of Elbaph hangs in the balance, and it’s obvious that neither Luffy nor Imu are willing to yield.
Imu remains a formidable opponent, even without revealing their true power. While Luffy and Loki currently form the most powerful partnership we’ve seen, the fight against Imu is still uncertain. No matter what happens, Imu won’t be deterred in Elbaf and will press forward with their plan to destroy the world, as the final war draws near.
