Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece is a hugely popular anime and manga that has been running for decades. The manga started in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 1997 and, while it entered its final story arc in 2022, Luffy’s adventure continues. The anime is scheduled to return in April 2026 after a short break, and will begin adapting the exciting Elbaph Arc. In the meantime, the live-action version has become a global sensation with its second season. To give fans even more, Netflix released a six-part podcast series featuring the cast and crew discussing how the show is made. The first episode features Iñaki Godoy, the actor who plays the main character, Monkey D. Luffy.
The podcast also featured a surprise video call with Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece. He answered questions from Iñaki about the series and what he’s planning after the manga concludes. Oda has dedicated nearly thirty years to working on One Piece, which is his only long-running story. He’s already decided how the manga will end and has a clear idea of his future projects.
One Piece Creator Doesn’t Have Plans to Continue Working After The Manga Finale

Iñaki casually asked Oda-san, “If you could learn any new skill just for enjoyment, what would it be?”
Oda replies, “I’d travel non-stop. Once I finish, I’d just travel.”
The author hasn’t elaborated, but his comment suggests he doesn’t intend to start a new story immediately. He’s mentioned Garp and Dragon as potential subjects for spin-offs after One Piece concludes, but this isn’t a firm commitment. With so many popular characters in One Piece, fans are naturally curious about what might come next.
Even after the story concludes, the world Oda has built offers endless possibilities for future exploration. But right now, Oda wants to deliver the ending fans have been waiting for before taking a well-deserved break – something that’s particularly challenging for manga artists working on a weekly basis.
One Piece Will Take Several Years to Reach Its Conclusion

I’m so excited for the anime to finally get to the Elbaph Arc! It’s been running in the manga since September 2026, and it’s incredible! We see the Straw Hats journey to the legendary island of the Giants, facing off against new rivals and getting closer and closer to achieving their dreams. Honestly, it’s a really long arc with a lot still unfolding, so we’re going to be enjoying it for quite a while, which is fantastic!
The story isn’t ending with the current storyline. The crew still needs to reach Laughtale, and the upcoming Final War will be extensive, meaning the series will continue for several years to come. Fans can rest assured that there’s plenty more One Piece to enjoy!
