One Piece: Elbaph’s Most Mysterious Character Isn’t Who Fans Think

The Elbaph Arc of One Piece is becoming increasingly dramatic as Harald’s past is finally being revealed. This backstory has explained both what happened during the God Valley Incident and how Elbaph lost its king. Throughout the arc, Loki, the prince who was wrongly accused of killing his father, has been serving his sentence. For years, he’s coped with being alone thanks to a secret friend he’s never met. While this character’s true name is unknown, the official English translation refers to them as “Shaggy.” Interestingly, the original Japanese name sounds like “Mosa,” which means “thickly bearded” – a reference to the appearance of the Transponder Snail the character obtained earlier in the story.

With recent events in the Elbaf arc and the story now focusing on the past, Loki’s enigmatic companion has been largely forgotten. After chapter 1167 came out, a popular theory emerged suggesting the voice from the Transponder Snail belongs to Shirahoshi. Several prominent social media accounts, like @PookiePiece, even stated this as fact, despite the manga providing no evidence. This idea gained traction because of a past joke involving Harald, King Neptune, and Neptune’s unborn daughter and Loki. However, as the rumors continued to spread, @DawnStussy, a Japanese fan translator and theorist, proved the claims to be false.

One Piece’s Shirahoshi May Not Be Loki’s Mysterious Friend After All

Over time, Loki and Shaggy became very close, and Loki learned the full story of an event from fourteen years earlier. But in a recent conversation (chapter 1151), Shaggy revealed they wouldn’t be able to speak again, quickly ending the call and thanking Loki for their friendship and support. Knowing Shaggy has a difficult past, Loki worried something bad was happening again. The author deliberately kept this character’s identity secret, likely because it’s someone we already know.

Considering all the evidence, it’s possible Shirahoshi could be the character everyone’s been trying to identify. However, a fan translator pointed out a big difference in how Shirahoshi and the mysterious character speak, suggesting the theory is likely incorrect. Shirahoshi is a young teenager, and her language reflects that, while the other character speaks with the maturity of an adult woman, creating a noticeable contrast.

Shirahoshi spent ten years isolated, too scared to connect with anyone. Given this, it seems unlikely she’s the same person as Loki’s long-time friend, especially since Shaggy has known the Giant Prince for years. While we don’t know for sure who it is yet, the author clearly has big plans for this mystery, building it up carefully over time.
