In recent times, the popular manga series “One Piece” has managed to cross over into our reality in various ways. Apart from the upcoming second season of the live-action Netflix adaptation, this beloved shonen franchise has been enthusiastically embraced by fans worldwide, paying tribute to the genius of Eiichiro Oda. Interestingly enough, “One Piece” has made its way into Indonesian politics as the anime has stirred controversy in the country. As Indonesia prepares to celebrate Independence Day on August 17th, the pirate flag of the Straw Hat Crew has garnered disapproval from government officials.
In the past few days, it appears that many Indonesian citizens have hoisted Luffy’s flag ahead of a major national celebration. The deputy speaker of the Indonesian House and an executive from the Gerindra Party, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, criticized this display of the “Jolly Roger” alongside the national flag in an official statement. He said, “This isn’t just a coincidence. There is a deliberate attempt to split our nation. Let’s stand together. We must all resist such actions. Not everyone desires Indonesia’s progress. As we move forward, there will always be those who resist it. Let’s unite and push back.
From a different perspective, Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle representative Deddy Yveri Sitorus voiced his viewpoint: “This can be viewed as a form of public critique, which is essential in a democratic system. Such symbolic acts are preferable to street demonstrations that might lead to violence.
One Piece And Politics
It’s hard not to notice some similarities between Eiichiro Oda’s long-running shonen series and our own world. The protagonist Luffy and his pirate crew have battled against the World Government, the military, the navy, and a ruling class known as the Celestial Dragons. One of the latest storylines that has gained global attention is the origin story of Kuma, a character who lost his homeland and family at the hands of the upper-class Celestial Dragons. After years of pain and mind control, Kuma has managed to break free from the World Government’s grasp and dealt a significant blow to one of the Five Elders, Saturn, on Dr. Vegapunk’s island.
As the anime gears up for an intense battle between the Straw Hat Pirates and the World Government, creator Eiichiro Oda seems to be sparing no effort in crafting a thrilling climax for his world. Although he hasn’t given any hints about the release date of the final chapter, the pieces are falling into place for a grand farewell for Luffy and his crew. Fortunately, it looks like we might have some time before the end approaches for the Straw Hat Pirates, and the impact of One Piece will continue long after its conclusion.
