One Piece Reveals Its Newest Tragic Character (& It’s Not Gunko)

During a temporary hiatus in the manga of One Piece, fans were left pondering over a deeply thought-provoking chapter, brimming with discussions about the newest heartbreaking character. Following a traditional narrative style within the series, the Elbaf Arc’s first significant flashback was initiated in the latest installment of One Piece. This flashback could significantly alter our perception of Loki’s character, who up until this point, seemed destined to become an adversary. Intriguingly, despite glimpses into Gunko’s past and her bond with Brook, Loki might turn out to be the most pitiful character in the Elbaf Arc when it concludes.

In the long-running series “One Piece,” created by Eiichiro Oda, a common technique is to humanize antagonists or potential villains via flashbacks. This was strikingly demonstrated in the case of Bartholomew Kuma, whose heartrending backstory took fans unawares during the Egghead Arc. Despite this recurring motif, Oda continues to astonish readers with this familiar tactic. The latest chapter (1134) offers a deeply moving glimpse into Loki’s childhood, where his mother abandons him in the cruel Underworld, leaving the newborn Loki struggling to climb back up the tree. It’s difficult to envision a more tragic origin for a character, and it appears that Loki might become the new empathetic figure in the Elbaf Arc, similar to Kuma.

Loki Could Take Gunko’s Place as Elbaf’s Tragic Star

Up until chapter 1134 revealed Loki’s past, it appeared as though Gunko’s flashback would be the most emotional part of the Elbaf Arc, but now I’m not so certain. Based on what little we’ve seen in chapter 1149, it appears that Gunko may have known Brook when they were kids, even before he became a pirate. Furthermore, in the same chapter, we saw a figure resembling Gunko wailing for her father, suggesting that this is where her tragic story unfolds.

In a twist of theories among fans, some believe Gunko could potentially be Brook’s daughter or possibly the daughter of Yorki, the leader of the Rumbar Pirates. However, with limited information available at present, neither theory can be definitively confirmed, especially considering recent reports that suggest Gunko is part of the Manmayer family and being a World Noble might not align with either hypothesis. For now, it appears Loki will continue to hold the title of Elbaf’s most tragic character, as the series promises to clear his name and address the allegations against him in future chapters.
