The Giants are currently the last race on Earth preserving the legend of Nika, passing down their folklore to future generations. An ancient text called Harley holds valuable insights into the past, but due to it being written in a language long forgotten, there have been various interpretations of Nika’s story.
In various interpretations, Nika is perceived as either a deity of mirth or a harbinger of destruction. What’s undeniable, though, is that Nika appears when the world is on the brink of significant transformation. Since then, the only family he has known is the Roger Pirates, which includes Gaban, the right-hand man of the Pirate King. Despite Gaban retiring from piracy long ago, they still meet up occasionally. One of Shanks’ territories is Elbaf, and as a Yonko, he frequently visits the island.
In Chapter 1152, we’re taken back 14 years to the time when Harald was assassinated within Aurust Castle. Shanks was leisurely soaking in a hot spring with Gaban at that moment. On the other hand, Shanks hasn’t reached Laughtable yet, but he seems to possess knowledge beyond what he openly shares. Interestingly, Gaban has mentioned that Shanks was once designated as the ‘child of fate’, a title he held until 14 years ago. This could be because Luffy hadn’t consumed the Devil Fruit during that period, implying that Shanks might no longer hold
Elbaf Arc Further Solidifies Shanks As One of the Most Important Characters
It’s undeniable that Shanks plays a pivotal part in the narrative, despite not making frequent appearances. He makes his debut in the opening chapter and might be seen as the spark that ignites the story, as his actions inspire the main character to embark on an extraordinary adventure. Additionally, it was under Shanks’ influence that Luffy obtained the powers of the legendary Devil Fruit – whether this was a stroke of luck or a carefully thought-out scheme remains uncertain. Ultimately, Shanks is the one who managed to return Nika to our world.
In addition, he wagered the fate of the world on Luffy’s abilities and gave up an arm to impart a significant lesson to the child.
