The One Piece story took a surprising turn in the Wano Country arc, revealing Luffy’s ultimate goal goes beyond simply reaching Laughtale and finding freedom. For over 20 years, fans thought that was his main ambition, but it turns out there’s something even more important he wants to achieve after becoming Pirate King. Interestingly, this dream is the same one held by the previous Pirate King, Gol D. Roger, who wasn’t able to fulfill it himself. Now, it seems Luffy is destined to finish what Roger started. Very few characters currently know the details of Luffy’s true dream, making it one of the series’ biggest secrets.
After his battle with Kaido, Luffy finally shared his lifelong dream with his crew. While the details weren’t immediately revealed to the audience, the crew’s reaction was incredibly strong – mirroring the shock and awe experienced by Oden and the Roger Pirates when Roger revealed his own ambition. It’s a dream so audacious that anyone who hears it is stunned. Though the series hasn’t fully explained the dream yet, the original Japanese version hints at its true meaning.
Luffy’s True Dream in One Piece Defines Freedom

A central idea in One Piece is freedom, and Luffy truly represents this concept. His dream is all about achieving it, but the original Japanese meaning is more nuanced than most English translations convey. According to a Japanese YouTuber and translator on X, the Japanese concept of freedom – expressed by the word jiyū (自由) – isn’t about external factors. Instead, it emphasizes inner liberation, literally meaning ‘from oneself.’
Luffy’s idea of freedom comes from wanting to live authentically, but it’s more than just ignoring rules. It’s about accepting who he truly is, not running away from it. Ultimately, he wants to free himself and others from the control of the World Government, and he understands that will only happen when he reaches his ultimate goal.
From childhood, Luffy has held a powerful dream that inspired his journey across the seas. This dream deeply moved Shanks, reminding him of his own lost captain and mentor. Shanks believed in Luffy so strongly that he risked everything – even his arm – to support him. This highlights just how important Luffy’s ambition is to the story and its potential to reshape the world.
