One Piece’s Final Saga Is Struggling With One Major Problem

Eiichiro Oda’s popular manga, One Piece, began its final story arc in 2022, and the series has been building towards a conclusion ever since. While Luffy’s adventure is far from over, the story has progressed from the Wano arc to Egghead Island and then to Elbaph. These arcs are considered some of the best in the entire series, bringing fans closer to uncovering the mysteries of the Void Century. The story continues to follow the Straw Hat Pirates as it reveals more about the world’s forgotten history. The strength of One Piece has always been its detailed world and rich backstory, and the final saga is emphasizing these elements more than ever before.

I’m so excited for what’s coming in the story – it’s building up to this massive world war! But honestly, while the overall story is incredible, the villains have been a bit of a letdown. One Piece is notorious for not having the strongest villains when compared to other big Shonen series like Naruto and Bleach, and it feels like that trend is continuing in the Final Saga. None of the new bad guys have really stuck with me, which is a shame!

One Piece’s Villains in The Final Saga Are Powerful, But Lack a Crucial Quality

While the villains from both story arcs – the Five Elders and the Holy Knights – are undoubtedly strong, sheer power isn’t enough to make them compelling. These characters are essentially controlled by Imu, and some, like Gunko, have even had their minds manipulated. Because they lack their own motivations or independence, they’re not particularly memorable. A truly captivating villain usually has a clear, driving purpose that grabs the audience’s attention.

It’s common for fans to find themselves understanding, and even sympathizing with, a villain’s motivations, despite their wrongdoings. Characters like Madara Uchiha from Naruto and Sosuke Aizen from Bleach are prime examples of well-developed villains. Similarly, many One Piece fans consider Donquixote Doflamingo the series’ best villain because of his complex morality, unique worldview, and enigmatic ambitions.

Those working for Imu, however, don’t have the same compelling qualities, making them forgettable and hard to root for. Currently, Shamrock and Garling Figarland offer a glimmer of hope, simply because they remain largely unknown. Despite this, expectations for Imu remain high, as this mysterious villain is deeply connected to the Void Century and possesses immense, almost unimaginable power, leading many to believe they are the story’s central antagonist.
