After 26 years, the anime One Piece is making a significant change to its release schedule – a first for the series. Creating One Piece at Toei Animation hasn’t been easy, but despite significant changes over the years, the show has consistently released new episodes every week. However, as the series becomes more ambitious and the team strives to make its most important scenes even more spectacular, a new production schedule is necessary to improve the overall quality. This is a positive step for the future, as the demands of anime production continue to evolve.
One Piece’s New Seasonal Schedule Is the Best Move to Save It
The One Piece anime is known for its high-quality animation, even with its weekly release schedule. However, keeping up with these demands has become challenging for Toei Animation. Recently, the series took a six-month break during the Egghead Arc, and when it returned, episodes were frequently delayed or replaced with recap episodes, causing significant frustration among fans.
Starting next year, the anime One Piece will switch to a new schedule of 26 episodes annually, split into two parts with significant breaks between them. The creators have stated they’ll now adapt roughly one chapter of the original manga per episode. This change is designed to improve the anime’s pacing and avoid the risk of overtaking the manga’s ongoing story, which was a concern with the current weekly release schedule.
What Does This Mean for One Piece’s Future?
This change is exciting news for One Piece fans! Episodes should feel more dynamic and visually impressive, matching the high quality of the anime’s best moments. Giving the creators more time will likely lead to an even better future for the series. However, despite the faster pacing, the overall anime might still take roughly the same amount of time to finish as the weekly releases did.
The One Piece: Elbaph Arc is scheduled to premiere in April 2026. If the anime continues to adapt roughly one chapter per episode, we can expect to be about 25% of the way through the arc by the end of the year. While the old weekly release schedule might have felt similarly paced, the longer gaps between episodes will likely make the arc feel much longer. This slower pace will give creator Eiichiro Oda more time to work on the series’ final saga, allowing it to continue for a significant length. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, though!
