One beloved Star Wars game deserves a revival similar to how Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was recently remastered. While it’s rare for major franchises to consistently produce excellent games, Star Wars has a strong history of doing so. Thanks to LucasArts, the franchise created many truly great games across various genres, allowing for a diverse range of stories within the Star Wars universe.
Games like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic are fan favorites and a major reason why we’re seeing a resurgence of interest in that era. Disney is not only remaking the original Knights of the Old Republic games, but also creating a new game, Fate of the Old Republic, that captures the same feeling and style. While not a direct sequel, it aims to recreate the magic of the originals. This is exciting news for Star Wars fans and suggests that other beloved games deserve similar revivals.
Why Star Wars Republic Commando Deserves a Comeback

I think Star Wars Republic Commando is a seriously underrated game. It’s a first-person shooter where you play as Delta Squad, a skilled group of clone troopers, during the Clone Wars – specifically, between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. What I’ve always liked about it is how it realistically portrays the brutality and horror of the war. It feels like a gritty, epic, and believable military shooter set in the Star Wars universe. While other stories have explored this side of the war since, Republic Commando was one of the first to do so.
When the game first came out, reviews were pretty mixed, but I’ve always thought it was fantastic. The battle droids are genuinely scary and present a real challenge, unlike enemies you can easily defeat. Unique enemies like the Geonosians add variety to the battles, and the game’s dark and realistic tone really captures the grittier side of the Star Wars universe. Details like the blood wiping off your visor and the inclusion of a knife emphasized the impact of combat.
It’s surprising that the dark and intense Star Wars first-person shooter never got a follow-up game, despite initial plans for a trilogy. Like many other Star Wars projects, the sequel was cancelled before it could get off the ground. Now, though, feels like the ideal moment to revisit that style of game – even if it’s not a direct sequel. A new story with fresh characters and a different time period could work perfectly, as there’s still a lot of potential to explore in that universe.
A game could focus on clone troopers who became stormtroopers, set during or just after Order 66. This would let players fight Jedi as bosses and also finish off the remaining Separatist droids. Many Star Wars fans still want to see more of the prequel era, and this would be a great way to do it. Alternatively, Disney could explore the story of a special unit of First Order soldiers. The sequel trilogy showed us that these soldiers were often children taken from their families and trained to fight, which could be a powerful story to tell.
Exploring the darker side of the Star Wars universe in a new Republic Commando game would be fantastic. Luckily, Disney partners with many talented studios and is open to great ideas. Several studios, like Bungie, 343 Industries, id Software, and Respawn – who already have experience with Star Wars – could be a good fit. Given the current popularity of tactical shooters, VOID Interactive, the team behind Ready or Not, could also create a compelling new Republic Commando experience, particularly if they focused on cooperative gameplay.
It’s uncertain if we’ll ever see it, but the recent success of Fate of the Old Republic suggests Disney might be open to revisiting older Star Wars ideas with a fresh approach. With the Battlefront series seemingly stalled, there’s an opportunity for a different type of Star Wars shooter, and a Republic Commando game feels like a strong possibility.
