Okay, awesome news for fans like me! It’s official: Onimusha: Way of the Sword is dropping on September 25th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. I just watched the new trailer, and it looks intense – Musashi is heading up to this mountain castle to face off against a seriously tough Genma. Can’t wait!
It’s the infamous Shuten-dōji, a powerful warrior who’s as skilled in battle as he is at partying. Our hero struggles to keep up, and appears defeated, but then unexpectedly transforms into the legendary Onimusha, ready to continue the fight. Luckily, players won’t have to wait long to experience this themselves, as a demo will be available later today.
After a 20-year gap since the last major Onimusha game, Way of the Sword tells a new story, focusing on the famous swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. He gains a powerful Oni gauntlet, briefly enters the afterlife, and is reborn with the mission of cleansing Kyoto of demons. His journey also involves a confrontation with his rival, Ganryu Sasaki, who wields his own Oni gauntlet.
So, I’ve been playing Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and yeah, it’s still got that classic hack-and-slash action from the other games, but it’s actually a little deeper this time. You can now deflect attacks and then really punish enemies by breaking their guard for a quick kill. Don’t go in expecting a *Soulslike game though – it’s way more straightforward and linear, not an open world at all.
