Only 1 AAA Game Is Releasing on PS4 Next Month, and It’s From Xbox

Man, the PS4 was the console for over ten years. I sunk so many hours into amazing games like God of War, The Last of Us, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and Ghost of Tsushima – the list goes on and on! But honestly, even though over 100 million were sold, it’s starting to show its age. November 2025 is going to be a big moment for the PS4, probably marking the last truly huge game released for it. And here’s the really weird part: it’s not even a Sony game! Microsoft’s putting one out, which just feels… strange, and kinda says everything about where the PS4 is headed.

The new game, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, highlights a big change. The PlayStation 4 used to be a key part of Sony’s gaming lineup, but the PlayStation 5 has now taken its place. Sony has stopped releasing major games for the PS4, while Activision (now owned by Microsoft) is still launching big titles on it, like this highly anticipated Call of Duty game. This likely marks the end of new major releases for the PS4.

The PlayStation 4’s Life Cycle Is Coming to an End

The PlayStation 4, released in 2013, quickly became a favorite among gamers, offering stunning graphics, immersive stories, and powerful performance. For years, it led the gaming world, setting the standard for high-quality games. Sony released many highly-rated exclusive titles on the PS4 that are now considered some of the best game series ever made. However, after a long and successful run, the console is nearing the end of its lifespan.

With Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 likely being the last major game released for the PlayStation 4, and Sony concentrating all its new AAA titles on the PS5 – as demonstrated by games like Ghost of Yotei, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, and Lost Soul Aside bypassing the older console – PS4 players can still look forward to games in other areas.

The popular new hero-shooter, Marvel Rivals, has launched on the PlayStation 4, proving that the older console is still receiving support from major games and indie developers. However, fewer and fewer games are being released for the PS4 overall, which is understandable given its aging hardware. While the PS4 is nearing the end of its lifespan, it’s enjoyed a long and successful run.

The Legacy of Older Consoles

Every successful gaming console eventually reaches a point where support begins to wind down, and the PlayStation 4 is now experiencing that. The PS2 continued to get new games even after the PS3 came out, and the same thing happened with the PS3 after the PS4 arrived. These periods are always a little sad, blending fond memories with the understanding that things change. It’s simply the normal life cycle of a console, and it was always going to happen with the PS4.

The PS4 boasts a fantastic game library, full of titles that are still enjoyable today. Many of these games have also launched successful series that continue to thrive. However, as gaming technology and player demands advance, the PS4 is starting to show its age. While it’s time for the console to be retired, its legacy lives on, and the PlayStation 5 may soon be following a similar path.

Like the PlayStation 4 before it, the PS5 will eventually be replaced. While the PS5 is still popular, people are already starting to talk about the PlayStation 6. It won’t be long before the PS5 is outdated, though Sony hasn’t officially said much about its next console yet. Fans, however, expect an announcement or changes to happen in the near future.

Sony’s Future Is the PS6, and It May Be Coming Soon

The decreasing number of new games for the PS4 isn’t accidental; it’s a clear indication that Sony is focusing on what’s next – the PlayStation 6. Even though the PS5 is still popular, a PS6 will happen eventually. Currently, only two games – Saros and Marvel’s Wolverine – are confirmed to launch on PS5 in 2026. This leaves studios like Guerrilla Games, Naughty Dog, and Santa Monica Studio likely to develop their next big titles for the PS6 instead.

Okay, so I’ve been reading a lot about when the PlayStation 6 might come out, and it’s looking like 2028 is the earliest we’ll see it. The PS5 will be getting pretty old by 2027 – around seven years on the market – and Sony usually releases a new console after that much time. What’s really interesting is that Sony’s own game developers have pretty much stopped making games for the PS4. They’re all in on the PS5 now. If that keeps happening, I think we’ll probably see some games released on both the PS5 and PS6, but there’s a chance some newer titles might skip the PS5 completely and go straight to the PS6!

As a PS4 owner, it feels like we’re at a bit of a crossroads. We can still enjoy all the amazing games that already came out for the console, but it’s pretty clear we won’t be getting much more new content. Our options are basically to upgrade to a PS5 to play the latest titles, or just hold on and wait for the PS6 to come out and then catch up on older games. But honestly, the PS4 has already made its mark – it’s home to some of the greatest games Sony has ever created, and that’s something special.
