‘Onwards to More Graphics Breakthroughs’: PS6 Architect Mark Cerny Shares a Staged Exchange with AMD Bigwig

Mark Cerny rarely uses X (formerly Twitter), so when he shares news – like earning a Platinum Trophy in a game – it feels genuine and personal.

This exchange with AMD’s Jack Huynh, however, reads like poorly disguised PR.

Along with a picture displaying screenshots of four games – each with its logo in the corner – Mark Cerny mentioned he recently tested FSR 4.1 upscaling in a handful of PC games.

He shared that the technology uses the same advanced AI network as the improved PSSR we launched with the PS5 Pro, and the results are amazing. He enjoyed collaborating with Jack Huynh and the team at AMD on this AI graphics technology, calling it a major success for Project Amethyst.

As a PlayStation fan, I’m really excited about Project Amethyst! It’s basically a team-up between PlayStation and AMD, and it’s shaping how PlayStation improves its image-enhancing tech – PSSR – and how AMD develops its FSR upscaling technology. It’s cool to see them working together on the future of graphics!

It’s expected that the work being done here will eventually be incorporated into PS6.

Within five minutes, Huynh immediately responded to Cerny’s message.

He expressed his gratitude to Mark Cerny, highlighting the impressive performance of AMD FSR Upscaling 4.1 in PC games. He noted it uses the same advanced technology as the improved PSSR on the PS5 Pro. He described their collaboration on Project Amethyst as a highly successful partnership and expressed excitement for future graphics innovations.

This reads like total marketing to us, perhaps in response to Nvidia’s recent DLSS 5 blunder.

Honestly, the way those messages were worded, carefully mentioning both FSR and PSSR, really felt like a subtle reminder about Project Amethyst. It’s like they published them specifically to get people thinking about it again.

To be fair, the collaboration does look like it’s been a success so far.

AMD has made significant progress in matching the quality of NVIDIA’s DLSS technology with recent improvements to its FSR upscaling. Likewise, PlayStation’s PSSR 2 is receiving excellent feedback and appears to be contributing to strong sales of the PS5 Pro.

This is encouraging news for the PS6, which is anticipated to feature the newest technology from both PlayStation and AMD.
