So, OpenAI finally released GPT-5 in August, and honestly, I was a little let down, as were a lot of other people. It just didn’t feel like the huge leap forward we were hoping for, and many of us actually felt like ChatGPT was *worse* after the update. It definitely didn’t live up to the hype, and a lot of users have been pretty vocal about their frustration.
Since then, the AI company has faced challenges trying to get back on track. These include legal disputes over copyright, financial difficulties, and its transition to a for-profit business, now backed by a new deal with Microsoft.
Google used this moment to showcase its advancements in AI with the launch of Gemini 3, calling it a significant leap forward in intelligent technology. The new model offers improved performance in areas like problem-solving, processing speed, and understanding both images and videos.

Facing increased competition from companies like Google and Anthropic, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman sent a company-wide memo, internally labeling the situation as a “code red.” This came after Google’s new Gemini 3 AI model significantly outperformed ChatGPT in various tests.
Google’s new model has impressed key tech figures, including Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, so much that he’s reportedly switching from ChatGPT after using it for three years. He made this decision after just two hours of experiencing the new Google offering.
OpenAI may be about to regain an advantage. Reports suggest they’ll release an update to their GPT model, called GPT-5.2, possibly as soon as this week (according to The Verge).
Notably, this new model comes with many enhancements and features that might help it compete with, or even surpass, ChatGPT.

A previous report from The Information indicated that OpenAI’s upcoming reasoning model performed better than Gemini 3 in internal tests. Tom Warren reports:
Sources say OpenAI initially intended to release GPT-5.2 in December, but competition has pushed them to move up the date. They’re now aiming for a release on December 9th.
The Verge reports that GPT-5.2 is currently scheduled to launch on December 9, 2025, but this date could change. Delays are common with new technology releases and can happen for various reasons, like problems with development or having enough server space.
