Starfield launches on PS5 in just one week, and I’m excited to finally play it.
But apparently, that’s a terrible idea.
With the release of Starfield getting closer, I’ve been telling my friends I’m excited to play it. But almost every time, they’ve warned me it’s not worth the effort. I’m starting to wonder if it’s truly as bad as they say!
I appreciate hearing what others think, but the criticism hasn’t changed my mind about Starfield. I still plan to play it eventually and decide for myself, though it’s starting to seem like waiting for a discount would be a good idea.
I’m writing about Starfield because I’m fascinated by the strong negative reactions it’s getting. I haven’t played the game myself – my job at Push Square keeps me focused on PlayStation games. I’ve been watching it from a distance, assuming it would eventually come to PS5.
I recall a lot of excitement leading up to its release in 2023. People were really hoping it would be a groundbreaking open-world RPG, and many predicted Bethesda had created something like a science fiction version of Skyrim.
To be honest, the game received a lot of good feedback, and I even found a particularly enthusiastic review on Pure Xbox. However, it didn’t take long for negative opinions to start spreading.
It didn’t take long for people to start criticizing it online, and it wasn’t just from anonymous or low-quality sources. I specifically recall several content creators I admired publicly expressing their disappointment with it.
Okay, I won’t lie, I was pretty bummed out for a bit. But I’ve been a Bethesda player for almost 20 years now, and it all started with Oblivion. That game totally blew me away with how much freedom it gave you to just do anything – it was incredible!
I’ve lost count of the hours I’ve spent playing Oblivion, Fallout 3, Skyrim, and Fallout 4. Bethesda’s games are unique to me – they always feel like vast, open adventures, even with their occasional quirks and glitches.
I was most excited about Bethesda games when the first trailer for Skyrim came out, and I haven’t felt that same way since. It’s pretty common to say their games haven’t been as good for the last ten years, but that actually makes me more curious to see what they’ve done with Starfield.
I’m still wondering, is the game actually that flawed? It clearly has a dedicated fanbase, as many are now creating content – articles and videos – to attract the new players on PS5. Starfield is experiencing a real comeback, driven by a significant update and a brand-new expansion, creating a lot of excitement.
There’s growing optimism that Starfield is about to get a significant update, though Todd Howard has clarified that while improvements are coming, the core game will remain largely the same.
Look, if you already thought the game was, well, intensely boring – one of my friends actually called it “relentlessly, impressively boring” – then this new update isn’t going to magically change your opinion. It’s still the same game, basically!
Starfield has definitely improved since its initial release, with over two years of updates from Bethesda. PlayStation 5 players are likely getting the most polished and refined version of the game. Hopefully, it runs smoothly on the PS5 – let’s not tempt fate!
So, what do you think? Is it silly of me to finally want to try Starfield? Is it really as bad as some people say? Vote in our poll, and then share your reasons in the comments!
