Be warned: This contains spoilers for The Mystery Knight, a story by George R.R. Martin that the A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms series will adapt in the future.
Before the premiere of HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, creator Ira Parker shared plans to introduce a well-known villain from Game of Thrones into the prequel series. While the first season, debuting on January 18, 2026, will largely feature new characters, the show will eventually include figures established in George R.R. Martin’s Dunk & Egg stories.
Parker has stated that the upcoming series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will include characters we’ve seen before in Game of Thrones, but only those who were still alive during the prequel’s timeline – about 90 years before the original show. While Maester Aemon Targaryen is expected to return, a few other younger characters from Game of Thrones will also appear in smaller roles, as they did in the Dunk & Egg novellas.
This also involves Walder Frey, who later becomes a well-known villain due to his role in the shocking Red Wedding. Parker told Polygon that if HBO continues the series, Walder Frey won’t appear until much later. However, Parker already has a specific idea for how he’d like to include Walder Frey in a future appearance in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
I have a funny idea, though it might be controversial. It happens around the third book, and involves a baby Walder Frey. The scene is a runaway horse-drawn cart about to hit the baby, but Dunk steps in and saves him.
Given how awful Walder Frey becomes in Game of Thrones – ultimately meeting a gruesome end at Arya Stark’s hands – it would be surprisingly ironic if Dunk saved his life. While the infant Walder is innocent at this stage, having A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ hero protect the man responsible for so much suffering for House Stark would be a controversial move.
Even though HBO hasn’t confirmed a second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms yet, Walder Frey probably wouldn’t show up until the end of season two or the beginning of season three. The character first appears in the third Dunk & Egg story, The Mystery Knight, which features a wedding between a Frey and a Butterwell family – a four-year-old Walder is also present with his father.
Although Walder isn’t directly identified by name in the short story – he’s only described as “a chinless boy of four whose nose was dripping snot” – author George R.R. Martin later revealed that this character is a young version of Walder Frey from Game of Thrones. This appearance in The Mystery Knight is mostly a fun, minor detail that allows the author to introduce the villain who would later appear in the HBO series without any major plot implications.
Now that Parker has plans to introduce a young Walder Frey in the future of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, there’s excitement about seeing other known characters from Game of Thrones make appearances beforehand. Characters expected or potentially appearing during this time period include Maester Aemon, Old Nan, and Bloodraven – all of whom, like Walder Frey, have significant connections to the Stark family later on.
