Lionsgate is making another film in The Hunger Games series, titled The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, scheduled for release next year. Similar to the previous movie, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, this will be a prequel to the original Hunger Games films. Excitingly, the new film will feature the return of two beloved characters from the original series, which fans are sure to love.
A recent report from The Hollywood Reporter confirms that Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson will be back as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark in the new Sunrise on the Reaping film. Fans are incredibly excited, and now everyone is wondering how their characters will be brought back into the story.
The new movie, Sunrise on the Reaping, is another prequel, and it’s set 24 years before the original Hunger Games. The story centers around the 50th Hunger Games and will show a young Haymitch Abernathy competing as a tribute – the same Haymitch who later becomes Katniss’s mentor.
The idea is that Katniss and Peeta might reappear in a future scene or glimpse. It’s unclear if they’ll be narrating the story or simply making an important appearance, but including them at all would be a big draw for fans – and could attract viewers who weren’t as engaged with the last movie, despite its success.
As a big fan of The Hunger Games, I was so happy to see Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson back together! They last played Katniss and Peeta as a married couple with children in Mockingjay – Part 2. Now, with the new prequel, I’m really curious to see how they’ll be involved – will we see them as they are now, or will the film take us back to another point in their story? I’m definitely excited to find out what the filmmakers have in store!
The upcoming film, Sunrise on the Reaping, boasts a stellar cast including Ralph Fiennes, Jesse Plemons, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Kieran Culkin, Elle Fanning, Joseph Zada, Glenn Close, McKenna Grace, Maya Hawke, and Whitney Peak. Francis Lawrence will direct, working from a screenplay by Billy Ray, and Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, and Cameron MacConomy will produce.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping will land in theaters on November 20, 2026.
