Oscars 2026: 7 Winners & Losers Of The Golden Globes Nominations

The nominations for the Golden Globes are out, and they’re already changing the landscape for films and actors hoping for recognition at the 2026 Oscars. While the voting group, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, has changed, the Golden Globes still have a big influence on who wins awards this season.

The 2026 Golden Globes nominations will offer a good indication of how different awards campaigns are progressing. While it won’t perfectly predict the 98th Academy Award nominations, there’s usually significant overlap between the nominees for both awards in most categories.

The Golden Globes nominations, as usual, included both unexpected picks and omissions. The films and actors expected to do well largely did, and the nominations give us a good idea of who’s likely to win – and lose – at the Oscars.

Loser: Sinners’ Supporting Cast

Ryan Coogler’s film, Sinners, received a strong showing at the Golden Globes with 7 nominations – the third-highest total of any movie this year. However, despite a talented ensemble cast, only Michael B. Jordan received an acting nomination. Wunmi Mosaku, Delroy Lindo, Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, and other supporting actors were overlooked.

While not everyone was expected to be nominated, Mosaku and Lindo seemed like the strongest contenders. Mosaku, in particular, was building momentum during awards season, having recently won a Gotham Award for Outstanding Supporting Performance and receiving nominations from both the Critics Choice and Astra Film Awards.

Just because Mosaku, Lindo, or anyone from Sinners wasn’t nominated for a Golden Globe doesn’t mean they can’t still be nominated for an Oscar. However, a Golden Globe nomination would have significantly boosted their chances of being considered top contenders.

Winner: Eva Victor

Eva Victor’s film, Sorry, Baby, is gaining significant recognition this awards season. Victor, who wrote, directed, and stars in the film, has received numerous accolades, including Screenplay nominations from the Critics Choice Association and Gotham Awards, and a Best Directorial Debut award from the National Board of Review. The film has also been featured at several film festivals.

Victor has now received a Golden Globe nomination for her leading role, adding to her nomination at the Astra Awards. This increasing recognition suggests that Sorry, Baby may receive Oscar attention, potentially for Best Original Screenplay. However, she also has a chance to be nominated for Best Actress, though that category is highly competitive.

Even if Sorry, Baby doesn’t win any Oscars, the film has already had a very successful awards season. The attention it’s received has helped more people discover and enjoy this highly praised comedy-drama.

Loser: Wicked: For Good

The musical Wicked: For Good did well at the Golden Globes, receiving five nominations, including recognition for Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s acting and their original songs. However, it didn’t win in all the categories it was up for.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is that it wasn’t nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. After the first film received a nomination in this category last year, many expected Wicked: For Good to also be recognized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Instead, director Richard Linklater secured two nominations with his films, Nouvelle Vague and Blue Moon.

The positive buzz around Wicked: For Good is a boost to its chances of being nominated for Best Picture, especially since initial reactions were somewhat lukewarm. While the film is likely to earn nominations in technical categories, Universal Pictures needs to generate more overall support if the movie hopes to seriously contend for the top prize.

Winner: One Battle After Another

The film One Battle After Another continued its successful awards season with a strong showing at the Golden Globes. It led all films this year with nine nominations, and was recognized in every major category it was up for, with the exception of awards for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.

Instead of risking a slowdown or unexpected losses, One Battle After Another seems steadily on its way to winning Best Picture. Leonardo DiCaprio, Teyana Taylor, Chase Infiniti, Sean Penn, and Benicio del Toro are all gaining momentum in the race for acting Oscars, and Paul Thomas Anderson is receiving increasing praise for his direction and writing.

Currently, “One Battle After Another” is the frontrunner for many awards this season. It’s expected to win several Golden Globes, and experts predict this success will continue through the Oscars.

Loser: Marty Supreme

Timothée Chalamet’s new sports drama, Marty Supreme, was gaining a lot of attention before the Golden Globe nominations were announced. Many people thought it had a chance to beat One Battle After Another, especially if A24’s planned wider release this month is successful.

The film didn’t perform well at the Golden Globes. Despite receiving three nominations, Marty Supreme was notably absent from major categories like Best Director and all acting awards except for Timothée Chalamet’s nomination for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy.

It’s surprising that Josh Safdie wasn’t nominated for Best Director. The lack of nominations for Gwyneth Paltrow and Odessa A’Zion in the Best Supporting Actress category also weakens their Oscar prospects. A better showing at the Golden Globes could have significantly boosted Marty Supreme‘s chances, but with this result, the film’s momentum has slowed down.

Winner: Amy Madigan

I initially didn’t think Amy Madigan’s performance in Weapons would get much attention during awards season, particularly from the Academy. This wasn’t because of her acting—it’s just that horror films rarely win over voters. However, I’m now starting to think she might actually be recognized for it.

Saoirse-Monica Jackson’s Golden Globe nomination adds to the growing praise for her performance in Zach Cregger’s horror film. She’s also received nominations from the Critics Choice Association and Astra, and was recently honored by the New York Film Critics Circle. Being recognized as a Best Supporting Actress contender further strengthens her position as a strong candidate.

Many people are now predicting that Madigan will be nominated for an Oscar. With lukewarm reviews for Wicked: For Good and significant attention expected for One Battle After Another in other categories, some believe she could be a surprising frontrunner to actually win the award.

Loser: Sydney Sweeney

The Golden Globes have a history of surprising choices for acting awards, often leaning towards well-known stars. That’s why many predicted a nomination for Sydney Sweeney for her performance in the film Christy, as it could have significantly improved her odds of being nominated for an Oscar.

I was really hoping for Sydney Sweeney to get some Golden Globe recognition, but it didn’t happen this year. They definitely favored established stars – Jennifer Lawrence, Julia Roberts, and Tessa Thompson were the actresses they highlighted. Honestly, with strong Oscar hopefuls like Jessie Buckley and Renate Reinsve already in the mix, and even a nod for the surprise nominee, there just wasn’t space for her this time around. It’s a shame, but I’m still rooting for her!

While she received a nomination from Astra, that’s been the only major acknowledgment of what many consider her best work yet. She currently lacks the support needed to be a serious contender for the 2026 Oscars, and a potential snub at the Golden Globes could effectively end her awards season chances.
