Game delays are common, and 2024 has already seen a few, particularly with the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6. Now, Outward 2 has been pushed back as well – it won’t be available in early access on July 7th as originally planned, and is now expected sometime in 2027 due to unrelated reasons.
Nine Dot Studios CEO and creative director Guillaume Boucher-Vidal announced on the studio’s website that they’ve made a sudden decision to delay the game. He explained that sticking to the original plan would likely result in a product that doesn’t meet player expectations. The team doesn’t want to disappoint fans of Outward, and they’ve heard feedback requesting more development time. Boucher-Vidal stated that the purpose of a beta is to listen to player feedback, and they plan to do just that.
Boucher-Vidal understood many people had planned their summer vacations around playing the game and expressed her regret for the disruption. She apologized to those affected, but also pointed out that it would be worse if they ended up spending their vacation playing a game they didn’t enjoy.
He explained that reaching the level of stability needed for Early Access was proving challenging. Their main question was simple: if they were to start charging for the game in a few weeks, would it be good enough? The team aimed for a significant improvement between the beta version and the full Early Access launch, hoping to gain player trust. Unfortunately, they realized that level of progress wasn’t achievable.
Nine Dots Studio acknowledges the situation is a major setback, describing it as a tough loss. They are framing it as a learning experience, vowing to improve and come back stronger.
Similar to the first game, Outward 2 focuses on exploring a fantasy world and trying to survive. You’ll often face tough enemies and likely fail at times, but dying isn’t permanent. You might even wake up in a completely new location and have to find your way back.
Though it’s a challenging game, players are drawn to its realism, minimal guidance, and overall freedom. It’s yet to be seen if the new version will be even better than the last, but at least you can now play with a friend, either online or locally. We’ll share a new release date as soon as it’s available.
