Overlooked 2026 Action Movie Becomes a U.S. Streaming Success After $19M Box Office Disappointment

The first half of 2026 saw some big wins at the box office. Films like Project Hail Mary and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie were huge hits in the spring, and indie horror movies such as Backrooms and Obsession (which is still popular after a month) dominated the summer. Of course, not every movie was a success; They Will Kill You, a horror action comedy with Zazie Beetz, didn’t perform well in theaters. However, it’s now gaining an audience on streaming platforms.

According to FlixPatrol, which tracks what’s popular on streaming services, They Will Kill You is currently the most-watched movie on HBO Max in the U.S. It quickly climbed to the top, surpassing films like Contagion and The Bride!. The movie was added to HBO Max on June 12th and became a top 10 hit in just a few days.

Why Did They Will Kill You Disappoint at the Box Office?

The movie They Will Kill You, released in late March, received mostly positive reviews, with many praising actress Beetz’s energetic performance. However, it only earned $19.3 million worldwide, falling short of its $20 million production cost. A major factor was the success of Project Hail Mary, which was a huge box office hit that spring. Project Hail Mary appealed to a wide audience, from dedicated sci-fi fans to casual moviegoers, and its widespread popularity made it tough for any other film to compete – even those trying a different approach.

The timing of They Will Kill You‘s release didn’t help its chances. It came out only a week after Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, another horror comedy aimed at the same audience. While Ready or Not 2 didn’t perform as well as the first Ready or Not ($39.5 million worldwide compared to $57.6 million), it still reached the key viewers first. This meant They Will Kill You had a harder time finding an audience, as there simply wasn’t enough demand for two similar movies so close together. Either film might have done well on its own, but releasing them so near each other meant they ended up competing for the same viewers and ultimately hurt both of their box office potential.

Streaming services have given a new opportunity for movies like They Will Kill You to find an audience, and it’s easy to see why it’s popular on HBO Max. Beyond being a new release, the film is simply fun to watch, with a distinctive style and well-crafted visuals. While the story itself isn’t groundbreaking, it’s still entertaining, especially thanks to Zazie Beetz’s strong performance. After her memorable role as Domino in Deadpool 2, it’s great to see her leading a film that lets her showcase her action skills.

Back in April, the director of They Will Kill You, Kirill Sokolov, expressed interest in making a sequel. While the film didn’t do well in theaters, a sequel isn’t impossible. If enough people rent or buy it on demand and it continues to perform well on streaming services, Warner Bros. might consider it. If a They Will Kill You 2 happens, the priority should be finding a more favorable release strategy to help it succeed in cinemas.
