Overlooked Fantasy Gem You’ve Probably Never Seen Is Now On Netflix

Every year, lots of movies are released, and it’s easy for some good ones to get overlooked. Sometimes films with talented actors and interesting stories don’t become popular, and they end up being underrated – meaning they deserve more attention. Netflix has a lot of these hidden gems, and a fantasy movie you might not have heard of is now available to stream.

Starting October 7th, you can watch director Stacie Passon’s 2018 film, *We Have Always Lived in the Castle*, on Netflix. This fantasy thriller, based on Shirley Jackson’s last novel, stars Taissa Farmiga, Alexandra Daddario, Crispin Glover, and Sebastian Stan. The story follows sisters Merricat and Constance, who have lived in isolation for six years after a family tragedy, and whose quiet lives are disrupted by the arrival of a seemingly friendly cousin with hidden motives. Critics and audiences alike have praised the film, giving it an 84% and 71% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively – it’s a real standout in the fantasy genre.

We Have Always Lived in the Castle Is a Compelling Character Study Masked as a Gothic Horror

The heart of *We Have Always Lived in the Castle* isn’t about solving the Blackwood family poisoning – it’s about the characters themselves. The film is a remarkably true and well-made version of the story, using the isolated, crumbling Blackwood Manor and the mystery as a backdrop to delve into how isolation and trauma affect Merricat and Constance. It’s an unsettling and captivating story that’s difficult to look away from.

It’s been six years since everything fell apart for Merricat and Constance, and honestly, watching their story unfold is heartbreaking. Merricat deals with the trauma by creating these intense rituals – burying things she thinks will keep bad things away, and getting more and more convinced everyone’s out to get her. Constance, though, just seems… withdrawn, refusing to really *live* outside their house. They have this really special, fragile connection, and it’s clear how much they rely on each other. Then Charles shows up, and Stan absolutely nails the role – he’s so charming at first, but you can tell he’s also controlling. He tries to impose this old-fashioned order on their lives, and it just starts to unravel everything they’ve built. The tension just kept building, and honestly, the way it all explodes at the end is devastating. It’s a really powerful story about their bond and how easily it can be threatened.
