Ozark Creator’s Bloody New Crime Thriller Just Launched on Peacock

Bill Dubuque, the creator of the popular Netflix series Ozark, has a new crime thriller coming to Peacock. The nine-episode show joins Peacock’s growing collection of crime dramas, which already includes series like Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and the original hit Poker Face. This new series adds another option for viewers who enjoy the genre.

On May 7th, Peacock will release all nine episodes of M.I.A., a new revenge thriller from the creator of Ozark. The series follows Etta Tiger Jonze, played by Shannon Gisela, as she seeks vengeance after her family’s drug operation is dismantled and her family is killed. Set in the vibrant and dangerous world of Miami, the show depicts her pursuit of those responsible. The first episode will also air on NBC on May 14th at 10 p.m. Eastern Time.

Peacock’s M.I.A. Has the Potential To Become the Next Big Streaming Crime Drama

The new show M.I.A. is getting off to a somewhat slow start. Critics are giving it mixed but generally positive reviews, suggesting it has potential to improve as the season progresses. Jessica Toomer from Collider noted that the show shines when it embraces its own unique identity, rather than trying to imitate Ozark. While the nine episodes reviewed don’t fully achieve this yet, a second season could help the show fully realize its potential.

The new series blends thrilling revenge action, reminiscent of John Wick, with the dramatic elements of a nighttime soap opera. It examines the heavy consequences of seeking revenge, though some storylines occasionally get bogged down in unnecessary dialogue. The show starts strong with an engaging premise and features plenty of fast-paced action like chases and gunfights. It also vividly captures the gritty, neon-lit atmosphere of Miami. Beyond a talented production team – including Dexter‘s Karen Campbell as showrunner – the actress Jonze is a major draw. Her performance elevates what could have been a typical revenge story into a compelling and nuanced character study, earning widespread praise.

Will There Be an M.I.A. Season 2?

As a big fan of thrillers, I enjoyed M.I.A. enough to recommend checking it out. However, its future is still up in the air! Peacock hasn’t made a decision about a second season yet. The first season ends in a way that definitely could lead to more stories, so here’s hoping they pick it up!
