James Cameron collaborated with director Robert Rodriguez to create the 2019 film Alita: Battle Angel, which is based on Yukito Kishiro’s manga Battle Angel Alita. Set far in the future, the movie follows Dr. Ido (Christoph Waltz) as he rebuilds Alita (Rosa Salazar), a cyborg who has lost her memory. As Alita tries to piece together her past, she becomes a target in the dangerous city of Iron City.
Fantasy is a challenging genre to master. While it’s meant to give creators complete freedom to build unique worlds and characters, historical fantasy adds a layer of realism. This means creators have to work within the bounds of history, which limits the ‘anything goes’ feeling that usually defines the genre.
