
Pocketpair plans to keep updating Palworld as they get closer to the full 1.0 release, according to publishing head John Buckley. However, these updates won’t be endless. Buckley told GamesRadar that while games like No Man’s Sky have received support for many years, he doesn’t expect Palworld to be updated for quite as long – likely not for a decade or more after the initial launch.
Many dedicated fans are hoping Palworld will receive continuous, large updates for years, similar to No Man’s Sky. However, the developers believe this is unlikely. Not only are there technical limitations with the game’s engine, but they also feel that constantly adding more levels and content to a survival crafting game would eventually make it overly complex and bloated.
He also explained that it’s challenging for game developers to support games with ongoing character advancement for a long time. Using World of Warcraft as an example, Buckley mentioned that the game has had to reset player stats several times to keep numbers like health and damage balanced and understandable. He believes that if Palworld hadn’t focused on traditional leveling and progression, it could have potentially received the kind of continuous, long-term support seen in games like No Man’s Sky.
“Even World of Warcraft had that stat squish years and years ago,” he explained. “Palworld is linear progression. I think if Palworld didn’t have that progression, you could do it forever like No Man’s Sky. But it’s gonna have to stop at some point, and then we can think about what comes after, and that’s exciting for us.”
Just because Palworld version 1.0 is out doesn’t mean updates will stop. In fact, the developers have even hinted at a possible Palworld 2.0, but only if they come up with ideas that are exciting and fresh.
He suggested a sequel to Palworld is possible, but depends on their ability to add new content that remains engaging and accessible. They want to avoid making updates that feel repetitive or alienate players.
He also pointed out that eventually, they’ll need to stop adding major updates to Palworld to avoid overwhelming players who just want to enjoy the game casually. He explained that this is a key challenge with the planned 2.0 update, and they’re facing a big decision: should they keep expanding Palworld and try to fix any resulting issues, or should they start considering a potential sequel or new project? He jokingly avoided saying the word ‘sequel’ to avoid jinxing things.
