Warning: This article contains spoilers for Paradise season two, episode four.
Paradise has taken an even more devastating turn.
In the second season, Secret Service agent Xavier Collins (Sterling K. Brown) began searching for his wife, Teri Rogers-Collins (Enuka Okuma), in Atlanta. The season opened by introducing viewers to Annie Clay (Shailene Woodley), one of the people who had survived the initial event.
After just four episodes, the tour guide—who had originally been a medical student—passed away peacefully with Xavier at her side. Since the worldwide disaster, the agent had been living in a high-tech underground bunker in Colorado, investigating the murder of President Cal Bradford (played by James Marsden). Meanwhile, Annie had made her home in Graceland, the famous estate of Elvis Presley.
After the devastating volcanic eruption, Annie found some peace at work, but tragically, her colleague Gayle Edwards (Angel Laketa Moore) succumbed to her injuries 46 days later. Following nearly two years of hardship, Annie began a relationship with Link (Thomas Doherty). Although Link and his friends wanted her to join them in searching for a rumored bunker in Colorado, she decided to stay behind.
Annie, who is expecting a baby, first met Xavier when his plane went down in Memphis during episode two of the show. In the most recent episode, which aired on March 2nd, Annie asked Xavier to take her to the bunker, hoping to find Link.
In the end, the two decided to search for Xavier’s wife, believing she had passed away, and then return west. Sadly, Annie died while giving birth, and her last wish was for her baby to be delivered to Link.
Following her character‘s heartbreaking passing, Shailene reflected on Annie’s life and tragic end.

She didn’t have much time to overthink things, she explained to The Hollywood Reporter in a recent interview. She believes her character had actually been preparing for those final moments, drawing on her medical training to understand the risks of childbirth.
Seeing her daughter healthy and strong, and realizing she had the resilience Annie lacked, brought a deep and natural peace and acceptance to the mother. It was a profoundly instinctive feeling.
