Video game movies are now a major part of popular culture. Recent hits like The Minecraft Movie and The Super Mario Bros. Movie have proven they can be much more than just critically disliked niche films. Hollywood is continuing to invest in these adaptations, with many projects in development, including Return to Silent Hill and Mortal Kombat 2. Now, Paramount+ has added another one – an animated film based on a hugely popular mobile game from the 2010s.
You can now watch The Angry Birds Movie on Paramount+. This animated film, released in 2016, is based on the popular Angry Birds video game. It’s about Red, a bird who has to attend anger management, and his efforts to stop a group of pigs from causing trouble on his island. While the first movie is now available, its sequel, The Angry Birds 2 – often praised as one of the best movies based on a video game – isn’t currently included.
The Angry Birds Movie Is a Great Video Game Adaptation, but It’s Far From a Critical Masterpiece
For a long time, movies based on video games were known for being poorly made and straying from what fans loved about the original games. However, The Angry Birds Movie was a surprisingly good adaptation. It captured the playful energy and basic premise of birds versus pigs, offering an entertaining story and bright, detailed animation that stayed true to the game’s look and feel.
However, a high box office gross doesn’t automatically make it a good movie. Critics and viewers had a mixed reaction to the film, giving it scores of only 44% and 48% on Rotten Tomatoes. Many found the story unoriginal and boring, the humor childish, and the characters and actors weren’t used to their full potential.
Even though reviews were mixed, The Angry Birds Movie was a huge success in theaters, earning over $352 million worldwide on a $73 million budget and becoming one of the highest-grossing animated films of 2016. A sequel, The Angry Birds Movie 2, followed in 2019 and, while it didn’t perform as well financially—grossing about half of the original’s earnings—it was a critical and audience favorite, earning scores of 72% and 84% on Rotten Tomatoes. This improvement was due to a more developed story, stronger characters, and a plot where birds and pigs teamed up to save their islands. A third Angry Birds Movie is currently being made and is scheduled for release in 2027.
What’s New on Paramount+?
Paramount+ has added a bunch of new movies to its streaming library, including The Angry Birds Movie. Families can now enjoy films like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Ella Enchanted, and Paddington, while other additions include 22 Jump Street, Annihilation, Gone Baby Gone, and the classic Pulp Fiction.
