Paramount+ Just Added a Goofy ‘90s Blockbuster (& It’s Perfect for Jurassic Park Fans)

Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park is a massive, groundbreaking film. Released in 1993, it was based on Michael Crichton’s novel and changed how movies were made with its incredible special effects. If you’ve enjoyed all seven Jurassic Park films and Spielberg’s new Netflix series The Dinosaurs, you can now watch this classic ‘90s blockbuster on Paramount+.

Following the success of Jurassic Park, Frank Marshall’s 1995 film Congo—a movie that both won a Saturn Award for Best Science Fiction Film and a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Picture—became available on Paramount+ on March 1st. The film was a major box office success, earning $152 million worldwide. It tells the story of an expedition into the African jungle to find a lost city, and the dangers they face, including encounters with aggressive grey gorillas and a remarkable talking gorilla named Amy.

Congo Is a So-Bad-It’s-Good Jurassic Park Wannabe

Don’t expect Congo to be as good as Jurassic Park. It scores very low with both critics (24% on Rotten Tomatoes) and audiences (29%), even lower than the weakest films in the Jurassic Park series like Jurassic World Dominion and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. While it clearly tries to recapture the magic of Jurassic Park, it falls short in almost every way. However, it’s so entertainingly bad that any fan of Jurassic Park should check it out.

If you’re looking for a way to describe the movie Congo, think Jurassic Park – but with a more over-the-top, action-packed feel. While it shares similar themes and is also based on a novel by Michael Crichton, the movie largely follows the same formula as Jurassic Park: an expedition ventures into a remote, dangerous area to find out what went wrong with a previous mission. From there, things get wild. Instead of dinosaurs, the danger comes from incredibly aggressive gorillas – some of whom can even talk, drink martinis, and use lasers! The creature effects, while impressive for their time, look a bit dated now. Like Jurassic Park, Congo has plenty of memorable scenes, including lost diamond mines, action sequences with lava, and a now-iconic line: “Stop eating my sesame cake!” Congo isn’t groundbreaking, but it’s a fun, campy 90s movie that delivers creature-feature thrills and plenty of laughs.

What’s New on Paramount+?

Paramount+ is becoming a great option for movie lovers. They’re constantly adding new titles, and March brought a particularly strong selection. If you enjoyed creature features like Congo, you can now stream Crawl and The Ruins, which both became available on March 1st. Beyond those, March also saw a variety of other popular movies added to the service, including 21 Jump Street, Good Will Hunting, The Banshees of Inisherin, and White House Down.
